The detail about the "surfer's ear" is really interesting and cool that they would be able to see it on almost completely skeletal remains.

Gosh you would think that the Harrah's card or the Kwik Pik Video Card would help lead back to a name (even if not an accurate ID). I don't see a listed estimate for how long the body had been there before it was discovered. I only see two "Kwik Pik" locations in Northern California but I suspect they haven't rented videos in a very long time.

Found in 2006 with the PMI of 5 years, so he likely died around 2001. If LE had checked into those cards as soon as he was found, they might have been able to ID him. I’m sure the records are long gone by now.

Thank you - in 2001 a video card (probably already expired) wouldn't be such an odd item to have in a wallet.

I hope LE followed up with Harrah's, casinos are known to do a lot of tracking to understand their clients spending habits. Surfing, SCUBA or swimming are generally hobbies of someone with some level of wealth. Lots of things can cause a change in circumstance of course, but usually someone with money is more likely to have been reported missing.

It appears that this person is still not identified. How sad. What a strange collection of items in his possession. Could he be some kind of obsessive "collector", mentally handicapped? I wonder if they did DNA tests on the cigarette butts.

- This person went missing approx. 2001 or before.
- He was estimated between 15 and 60 years, so he was born between 1946 and 1991 (found in 2006) That's a broad range.
- In Namus he is stated as white/Caucasian. Where is the multi racial thing coming from?
Let's tune in on the medical terms:
- He has on teeth #14 carabelli's cusp, #14 is the first upper left molar (international chart).

The Cusp of Carabelli is a heritable feature, so its presence indicates European ancestry.

People of European ancestry tend to have teeth that are flat, without shovels or ridges. Their teeth are smooth on the front and the back. Molars typically have two roots instead of three. How Your Teeth Reveal Clues About Your Ancestry

Osteoarthritis (OA) of the temporomandibular joint is a unilateral, degenerative disease of the jaw joint. It is characterized by breakdown of the articular cartilage, architectural changes in bone, and degeneration of the synovial tissues causing pain and/or dysfunction in functional movements of the jaw.

Could it be Christopher Grindey? I'm not sure what to make of an oddly shaped skull. 1491DMCA - Christopher Joseph Grindey
He suffers from schizophrenia and has a physical impairment that causes his left hand to curl and his left foot to drag.
His teeth look nice and also his nose is not asymmetric, but all things could have happened after the missing date.

Thinking about a timeline.
Is there a local around who does know something about the Kwik Pik in Humboldt County, or other places in CA, in those days. Nowadays a video card is something different, so I guess this was a card to hire videos? VHS stopped being in use around 1995, then DVD's came. Of course it could have been an old card. Looking in my wallet, I have a couple of oldies.
I also wonder about the Harrah's card. It's associated with casino's. I found the casino in Nevada, Las Vegas, called like that since 1992, but there a others in other states. Makes me wonder if the location of the casino/hotel was not on the card.
Same thing about the Barter Faire (typo or is it a name of a particular faire called, 'Barter Fair', without an e) I wonder where this one was held.
Maybe this information was put in by a local and are this logical things everybody knows in Ca, but I really want to know more about it.

This article from 2006 was updated in July 2018
CA - CA - Humboldt Co., Wht/Blk/NtvMale, 15-40, asymmetrical skull, Oct'06

Workers found a human skull on timberland in Fieldbrook Monday, prompting investigators to search the area unsuccessfully for other remains.

The skull appears to have been there for five years or more, said Humboldt County Coroner Frank Jager. It was found not far from the site where the headless body of Lonna Rae Angelel was found in 1995. Her husband Larry was convicted of murder.

While he felt certain the skull belonged to Angelel, dental records ruled that out, Jager said. The skull was taken to an anthropologist at Humboldt State University Thursday in hopes that its age and sex could be determined. That may help narrow the search of missing people.

”It’s a mystery,” Jager said.

Updated part
Detectives and other investigators on Wednesday went back to the area on Green Diamond Resource Co. land off Old Railroad Grade Road. They found a pair of binoculars, a set of keys with a Honda car key, a green nylon jacket liner and several lighters.

Sheriff’s spokeswoman Brenda Godsey said that just because the items were found in the same area does not mean they are connected to the skull.

”It’s not necessarily a crime scene,” Godsey said. “Human remains don’t necessarily add up to homicide.”

Here is an article about the murderer of Ms. Angelel, her husband. Clipping from The Press Democrat - Newspapers.com

Thanks. Good to have you aboard. He doesn't seem to be mildly disfigured to me and he went missing far after this person was found. Good find the canine and the Honda. Keep on digging Coffee56.

Strange.....Thinking about the canine tooth in cellophane...was it his own canine missing (which one?) ore did they mean a collected tooth/dog tooth for instance... Was it a piece of/broken tooth or the whole "thing".

Was the drawstring clasp fitting the green jacket, later found?

Couldn't they take any DNA from one of the items?

Description/more info about the cards still standing.

Gabby was last seen in the Casa Grande area with his wife and another unknown male a week prior to Gabby's disappearance. Gabby has a visible protruding bump on the left side of his forehead that looks like a knot. He has the name "BARRERAS" tattooed across his stomach in Old English and a tattoo of an Aztec warrior on his right shoulder. He also is missing one of his front top teeth.

From Arizona, bordering CA, Las Vegas on the way to Humboldt county, pmi UID approx. 5 years, he went missing in April 2002, according to the poster, Namus says June 2003. Bump, could be causing something like asymmetric skull, missing a front tooth. Fit's in the age range. Wears prescription eyeglasses. also later found on the scene, if they have a connection is not known. There is nothing about back problems or the ears in MP. At least I couldn't find it.

Reading this thread back I'm kind op confused. In the beginning we were talking about the finding of a "strangely" shaped skull. At that time race wasn't sure. Later a Namus file was made. Race is stated White/Caucasian. Age range is stated 15 - 60. So the header isn't correct based on that. What raises questions is this: nowhere in the Namus file they talk about an asymmetric/strangely shaped skull.....nothing about it. Also in the Namus file they are talking about remains (Near complete or complete skeleton) so not only a skull. Did I miss something along the way?

There seem to be two threads made for this John Doe. I'm going to report my own post to the mods so they can merge the two and change the header.

I'm very happy this person is probably identified. Also a bit sad there is no face or name to go with it. Selfish, I know, and we are not entitled to, but putting energy in trying to find his name makes me wanna know who he was. It happens a lot lately.

May he rest easy now. Condolences to his loved ones.

This UID is still marked as Unidentified of Humboldt County SO site. I hope they'll update soon.
