GUILTY CA - Former NFL player Anthony Smith charged in four murders, 1999-2008

Anthony Wayne Smith, a former Oakland Raiders defensive end who is awaiting a retrial for his alleged role in the 2008 murder of a Lancaster man, has been charged with three additional murders, the Los Angeles County district attorney's office confirmed Wednesday.

A criminal complaint, filed Monday, includes the original murder charge involving the slaying of Maurilo Ponce but also accuses Smith of the 1999 killings of brothers Kevin and Ricky Nettles and the murder of Dennis Henderson in 2001.

City News Service (via the Los Angeles Daily News) provided details from the case: "The Nettles brothers were found with their heads wrapped in duct tape and Ricky Nettles' stomach had been branded with a burn in the shape of a clothing iron, according to testimony during Smith’s preliminary hearing."

Smith, 48, had been scheduled to be sentenced Monday, but Superior Court Judge Daviann L. Mitchell delayed the hearing until Jan. 22...

Mitchell declared a mistrial on a fourth count involving the Oct. 7, 2008, shooting death of Maurilio Ponce after jurors reported that they had not reached a unanimous verdict on first-degree murder.

Prosecutors are expected to announce at the Jan. 22 hearing whether they want to retry Smith for Ponce’s killing.
