Could she have said who shot them when she called 911 ?
It could be edited out

Salvatore's vigil is going on today. They showed some of it on the news, and I'll probably be able to post a link later. I feel incredible sadness that this tragedy happened. It is some comfort that Salvatore's heart was young and strong, and a part of him still lives on helping someone else.

It's just so awkward and hard to sleuth this until we learn more facts, and until Gianni is found.

Prayers go out to all the Family and Friends of Salvatore and Ilona.

Just picked this post as it is more recent. I very much appreciated all your posts about what you learned from the scanner. However, I am mystified why it is not available to read. I see newer and older ones about missing people.

Also, although I have read this from the beginning, I don't recall any mention about Gianni's cell phone pings, have you read anything about them? As you said, LE is not releasing much information at all.

TIA

I'm sorry I may have missed this but where did these
Brothers work?

As far as I know, when this was first on the local news, I heard the sons worked for the father's or parent's restaurant business in Lakeside, CA. Ilona's fb page had some new gluten free products which I believe were for a 2013 new, maybe frozen food, business. However, I haven't been able to determine if they have an actual restaurant currently, and would like to know if that's where both sons were working. Anyone know?

"As the sun set over Pacific Beach, family, close friends and peope just wanting to show support gathered in front of flowers, candles and a board showing pictures of Sal Belvedere with his family. Also on that board, a flyer reminding everyone that Sal's older brother Gianni is still missing."

"Through tears, Laura Belvedere made an appeal. "Gianni, if you're listening, we know you have a broken heart. Come home to us. We love you."

Sorry, not quite sure what you're asking about with the bolded? Is that in reference to the tweet w/ the picture I posted from one of the news stations? Or the 911 call now not public? Or...? (Sorry, sleep deprived and probably just being thick headed at the moment! :blushing:)

As for his cell phone, that IS one thing I've not heard ANY talk of whatsoever - on the scanner, in the media, or really even comments on articles (though I've not read every one of them)

They are often CRAZY quick to track cell phones here.

I'm not sure how they manage that in most cases since we often hear them needing warrants for that in other cases, but seems not to be the case in San Diego.

In fact, as I posted in some other thread on another case, several times they've gotten reports that are credible suicide threats (typically about jumpers) and pinged the phone and even manage to get there in time to essentially yank one back down off the bridge - literally seconds before it'd have been too late!

They do it with stolen phones (dispatch often mentions that she'll use her iPad to track an iDevice) they do it with at risk people who haven't been missing long, etc.

So I can't imagine they haven't done so in this case, but I'm surprised it's apparently not led anywhere.

At this point, who knows if his phone would even ping, since we don't know if he's truly with his car (and if so if he has a charger in it) or even with the phone.

I don't imagine there's a chance in the world that all three did NOT have phones on them - especially since they possibly were trying to meet up at the mall - so besides just pinging Gianni's phone, I'd hope they had pinged phones Salvatore and Ilona had, even though they didn't need to locate them (to see if they had been in the mall area for awhile, to see if they pinged where Gianni's phone was prior)

Actually, I'd suspect they would try to get cell tower records to see everyone who had a phone that pinged during the relevant window around the mall (assuming that's where the entire thing took place). That I'd suspect would require a search warrant.

Based on just knowing how quickly (and frequently) LE is able to trace phones here (probably have heard about a dozen instances in a one or two hour window earlier tonight - and that was just in one area of San Diego) I'd assume that at least the records on Gianni's phone once they realized he was missing would be accessed.

But perhaps the "back pings" (prior to Ilona's 911 call) would need a warrant?

I've not heard anything about them sitting on a house or location that appeared to be related to this case, and often undercover, stakeouts, or plain clothes stuff is all still heard on the scanner here (some divisions and agencies more than others) - though it's not like I can hear all of it obviously - so I'm guessing that while they may have tried or continue to, it's not led to anything especially helpful at this point.

The reports have been all over the place but I was going off one of the most recent articles.

"Salvatore was shot in the head and torso around 1:15 a.m. on Christmas Eve."

"Flint was shot in the head, but managed to call 911 to report the shooting and their location near Mission Valley Mall at around 1:15 a.m. that day."

http://www.nbcsandiego.com/news/local/Vigil-for-Salvatore-Belvedere-Pacific-Beach-238309621.html

Is it possible for one shot to have hit both of them? Like if Sal was the target, is it possible for a bullet to pass through Sal and then hit and kill Ilona?

This (to me) definitely looks like it was AT LEAST four shots and likely more.

I don't recall the multiple upper torso shots on Salvatore statement before. I only remembered several others saying both shot in the head and then both shot in the abdomen and/or torso.

Ilona Flint, 22, died Monday morning after a gunman shot her in the head and upper body around 1:15 a.m.

Salvatore Belvedere, 22, was shot multiple times in his upper torso and is in very critical condition, San Diego Police said.
http://www.utsandiego.com/news/2013/Dec/26/tp-mall-shooting-victims-named/

Actually, given that, it's pretty amazing that his heart was able to be transplanted. Even one shot to the torso could easily have hit his heart you'd think...but multiple and it still being 'saved' seems quite remarkable, no?

I thought the earlier reports/articles/broadcasts had said they had worked there in the past, but I'm wondering if one just closed and they opened another or something, because now they all seem to say they were still working at the family restaurant.

Maybe both/and?

And no matter the case, the U-T has differing names on the restaurant. Most identify it as the Mario's one.

If I can find it without hunting forever, I actually think one of the broadcasts showed either the restaurant front/sign itself w/ one reporting from there or just moving film of it or had a picture of it behind a reporter and I'm quite sure it was the Mario's place (based on yelp's sign picture of it).

And also according to yelp Ottavio's closed sometime in 2012 or so, so that may be what's behind two restaurant names and the possibility of it looking like the place may be closed. For what it's worth, apparently Mario's has pretty good food! :)

This one (from yesterday)

His father operates Mario’s restaurant in Lakeside, and both sons worked there.

And this one (from last weekend)
Beecroft said Salvatore left school early to work at his family’s Italian restaurant, a popular spot called Ottavio’s.

I think knowing whether any of them routinely carried a gun would be very important.
If they owned one, I can see Christmas shopping late at night as a reason to carry it.
But if none of them owned, or had any interest in guns... that is quite different. :twocents:

Not finding it in print yet, but on the 11 pm broadcast of either KGTV (10) or KFMB (8) they had a different person speaking out (not the uncle Otto or the lime-light-loving Andre).

It was a female (and I think it said a relative) who I'm guessing is about in her 40's-50's (so maybe an aunt?) who had sparkly gold-ish coloured eyeshadow.

She seemed to indicate that they had NO interest in guns/violence/etc. and that would be very out of character.

Of course, again, that's the type of thing you expect a family member or friend to say - it's so very, very rare for someone to be like, oh yeah, he's always threatening people and obsessed about weapons or something (LOL) - and people can often have a side no one knows about (like the likely major mental illness issue in the current Teleka case that's just coming out that family was seemingly unaware of)

So who really knows what weight any of that may or may not carry.

I'll try to catch it again on one of the morning broadcasts and see who exactly she was (and then what station should have it mentioned in an article).

Ohp, just caught more if it! Lucked out with that - figured I'd have to wait till 5 am since it's 15 minutes into the early broadcast!

It IS someone's aunt (though I still didn't hear which one) and she's got (gorgeous) curly hair, the sparkly eyeshadow, and a pink scoop neck sweater/top thing.

Said there was "not a bad bone in their bodies" and adamant she/they had never known them to have/be interested in guns.

It IS KGTV (10) that has the exclusive interview with her from after the vigil yesterday.

Maybe on the 5 one I can tune in earlier so I catch the very beginning part! :scared:

The whether or or not the phones (Gianni's, especially) had been pinged made me think of something I was mulling over the other night.

That is, where was Iolna's cell phone found?

Was it in her hand or where it'd appear to have been dropped from her hand? (Meaning had that 911 call come from the position she was found in in the car vs. possibly having been elsewhere at first - though even that might not be able to be ruled out since she could have held onto it to the place she ended up were they not one in the same)

Was it somewhere entirely different? Was it perhaps in the back of the car and she was in the front? Or?

I don't recall it being said it was an open line after she called 911, but why wouldn't she have kept the the call connected? If she was truly struggling to get out as much as she did (which I still seriously question as even being the case) during that 911 call, her managing to disconnect the line seems far more far-fetched if she were in such rough shape at that point.

It appears that Ottavio's was the one in Utah and Mario's is the one here in CA.

This is the 'about us' page from Mario's in Lakeside

http://www.marioslakeside.com/about.html

"Soon all of our relatives began to branch off and start their own restaurants with the same great recipes from Nonno. Uncle Joe and Uncle Vince have Mamma Rosa's, Uncle Ottavio has Ottavio's, Uncle Charlie has Donato's, my Uncle Santo had Valentini's, and my Brother Lenny has Mangia Bene.

During this time, I worked from one restaurant to another, gathering recipes, and taking advice form everyone. Dad called me in Utah, when I was working with Uncle Ottavio, and said, "Well, it's your turn." and here I am.

Mario, my name, my turn. The same great food that you have enjoyed in the East County for over 46 years.

Buon Appetito!"

I saw the aunt on the news report speaking from the vigil, too, TravelingBug.
She did say, as you mentioned, "there was "not a bad bone in their bodies" and adamant she/they had never known them to have/be interested in guns."

She also said something about never even hearing raised voices. I'd like to find the video and hear what she said again.

Here's two videos of the vigil for Salvatore yesterday, but neither seems to show the aunt that spoke.

No aunt on this video either.

Dozens gather at vigil for Mission Valley shooting victim: Prayers offered for missing brother

Uncle shares new info about what he says happened

http://www.10news.com/news/vigil-he...ey-mall-parking-lot-on-christmas-eve-01012014

"He also said something police have not, that Gianni was at the scene where his brother and Ilona were shot and killed."

"He was there. They know he was there," he said.

"Otto says the three were doing some last-minute Christmas shopping at Westfield Mission Valley Mall. Stores like Macy's were open late for extended holiday hours."

"Sal picked up Ilona in my brother's car. Gianni was driving the other car," said Otto. "For what reason, I have no clue. I don't know what it was."
