Off Topic, but there's been a lot happening in San Diego. I just want to share this interesting article. This happened yesterday. It is a big deal to get these gang members off the streets.

Feds: Alleged Pimps Branded Prostitutes With Tattoos
Two dozen suspected gang members from San Diego were allegedly involved in a major sex trafficking ring spanning nearly 50 cities

"There were approximately 60 victims from San Diego and officials said at least 11 of those victims were underage."

and this

"According to court documents, it’s common for pimps to carry highly-adorned chalices known as “pimp cups” as a symbol of their status. Some pimps also have dental “grills” – dental add-ons made of gold that can be worth thousands of dollars."

This was a HUGE deal and thanks for sharing it with everyone Curious Me!

As for Gianni being a POI, he has not been officially named as such. What may appear to be the obvious to the general public is apparently not obvious to LE. This just reinforces what we always say in these cases...the family & LE are withholding a lot of information.

Just yesterday I heard sirens in my quiet SD community for at least a half hour and my first thought was of Gianni. Was he being chased, did they find him? Of course it was not the case but it's where my mind goes. It was a run away unmanned tree truck rolling down the street before coming to rest into a home.

I am confused on the different reports that the reward was raised by the family or Crime Stoppers. Now both are reporting the same?

I was a close friend of Ilona and Gianni. I actually signed up just to join this thread. I wish I had found this earlier, I've been desperately searching for more information about a lot of the things you've been discussing. It's also refreshing to see people exploring all of the possibilities and oddities about the case, nearly all of the comments I've seen elsewhere say something to the effect of "Obviously a love triangle, Gianni killed them and ran away. Case closed." I'm glad that others are seeing the same mysteries I am, and I'm apparently not just blinded by my love and respect for them.

I'd prefer to remain anonymous. I don't want anyone to get the idea that I'm seeking attention from this tragedy.

I met Ilona about 5-6 years ago, and Gianni a few months after that. I never met Salvatore. We became increasingly good friends until they moved to San Diego roughly two years ago (I live in Provo, Utah) , after which we still stayed in touch but I obviously saw them much less. The last time I saw them in person was about a year ago when they briefly visited Provo. My last contact was texting with Ilona about a month ago, she seemed happy (as usual) and didn't give any indication that anything was wrong.

I'm sharing all this because I'd like to be able to talk openly about this, so knowing a little background would probably be helpful. I'd also like to find answers, and help all of you do the same. So perhaps I'll be able to help you fill in some blanks about their lives and/or character, and hopefully we'll all get a clearer picture of what happened. At this point, the case is deeply confusing to me. The many articles I've read about it have only left with me more questions, many of which seem to have been discussed here.

Here's what I can say about them: they're both extraordinarily kind. I genuinely agree with all of the glowing remarks about their character that other friends have made in the media (by the way, I haven't spoken to or been contacted by the press). Both of them always showed genuine interest in me and my life, and would even ask about little details that I had told them months prior. They're remarkably complimentary, and we seemed to agree on just about everything we discussed (politics, music, philosophy, etc.). I don't recall ever seeing either of them angry- neither at each other, or in general. The closest thing to anger I witnessed was when I was telling them a story about someone (they didn't know) that wronged me, and they just expressed anger in a supportive way.

They were very positive. Ilona in particular seemed to just radiate happiness. They were also crazy about each other. As has been reported in the media, they've been dating for quite a long time. And at least when I was around them, they didn't show any signs of tiring of each other. It's really difficult for me to imagine Ilona cheating on Gianni, especially with his own brother. As I said before, I never met Sal but both of them mentioned their respect for him and told me that I should meet him (though he had already moved to San Diego at that point).
I would like to help in any way I can. Feel free to ask me any questions that I might be able to answer. I'll be happy to answer if it's potentially relevant and/or doesn't violate their privacy. I am friends with both Gianni and Ilona on Facebook.

Here are a few of my lingering questions:
  • TravelingBug mentioned hearing a snippet of Ilona's 9/11 call. I didn't think any of that had been released. Did you hear it on the police scanner or from the press? Either way, does anyone know where I could find any of it?
  • TravelingBug, you also mentioned driving through that area since this occurred. Was any of the crime scene still active? If so, did you notice where any of the evidence markers were? Like if there were shell casings or anything away from the final location of the car. Your theory about being shot in separate instances is interesting, and I haven't heard that mentioned anywhere else.
  • Sealing Sal's cause-of-death doesn't make any sense to me. What could they possibly want to hide? That seemed like the one thing that was definitely clear... his dying from multiple gunshot wounds. That's not standard operating procedure in open cases like this, is it?
  • What's with all the conflicting information about Gianni's last known location and presence (or lack thereof) at the mall? Do most of you think that the police are actually pretty clear about his whereabouts at the time and they're withholding that information?
  • How significant is it that Gianni hasn't been named as a suspect? Is that typical in missing-person situations in which they don't want to discourage his return? It hasn't been reported that Ilona named him as the shooter in her 9-1-1 call, and it seems like she definitely would have. Would the police be obligated to report that he's armed and dangerous if they thought he was? I can't tell if I'm blinded by high opinion of Gianni, or if it really is likely that he had nothing to do with this (or was another victim).

Here are some photos of each of them:

:bump: CuriousFriend, I hope you're doing alright. Looking at these photos again. I see young and happy,
and in love. You shared what you saw then. BBM Since their move, I'm wondering if anyone saw any changes in Gianni recently. Did Ilona have any close friends in San Diego that she confided in?

Looking at Illona's pictures make me very sad. What a beautiful, young girl with so much to live for. She is the same age as my kids and it makes me so sad to think about her final moments. RIP to her and Salvatore. So tragic for the families and friends.

That's why I wanted to bump the photos. Someone decided to take their lives, and during the holidays no less, and it is such a tragedy that it requires the strong attention of investigators to get some answers.

Yet, I get the feeling, Gianni has to show up, or I fear we'll get no answers. It's a very strange situation really and seems like prolonged agony for all who are concerned. Very sad.

The longer he stays away, the more he looks guilty, imo.

It does not make any sense that a killer would shoot the other 2 and then kidnap Gianni. And if they did, they would have dumped him somewhere soon after.

If Gianni ran because he was scared, then he has had time to go to police or the FBI for help already.

The family showing pix of him with a beard and longer hair---makes me think they are suspicious too.

Sadly, I think it was the all too obvious, Shakespearian themed, tragedy.

My thoughts (and fears) exactly.

Could they have gone to the movies?

I suppose. But seems odd to go to a late night movie with your fiances brother, and not include fiance.

True but this is probably why they are both dead!

Assuming the 'silencer' route.

Premeditated to grab a silencer in a crime of passion = not likely. Also not likely to be random either.

From all accounts - cracks would have been seen earlier with the brothers if their was such a major issue.

I can't get past something along the lines of it being organised. Was it meant to be the Dad? It was his car? Have all business dealings been above board? Is Gianni in hiding as the family have been sent a message? Is he in protective custody/hidden by the family?

If it was a mistaken hit - Gianni would have no reason to hide.

I just wonder if the family in San Diego is not saying very much because they do have doubts on whether Gianni was involved. It seems odd that we've been dependent on the uncle's statements from Utah. No doubt, it's an awkward situation for the family with Gianni still missing.

Also, you'd think if it's true, that if they were living at the same address with the parents or other family, someone would notice if there was a tense situation between the brothers developing.

Was Gianni really there and was he involved? Give me a clue!
What happened at the mall and why?

And if they were living with the parents it'd seem we'd have much more conclusive information on the timeline, as well as the plans for the evening.

Well, for that matter, the awareness that (according to Andre and Uncle) this Salvatore driving Ilona around thing was commonplace, instead of saying they weren't sure why they were together.

If your clue plea works you better have lips as loose as Andre and uncle so you can fill us in! :floorlaugh:

Could they have gone to the movies?

I don't think that would work unless they had left it early.

The last movies started at 11:20 or 11:25.

It'd be very, very close for them to have finished the movie by the time they were shot, and I'm not sure any would even have been possible. Let alone have time to finish the movie and then walk down to where the car was in time for everything to have played out as it did.

If they had been at a movie, I'd suspect we'd know - they'd very likely have ticket stubs on them which would likely have been found at the scene, and thus establishing the time line more or saying what their plans were.

And if they had found stubs on them, I'd think they'd have certainly been at the theatre having gotten someone in to pull video to see who was with them while paying, etc. Even though Gianni being missing wasn't know, I'm sure they'd have wanted to not only see them, but anyone else around who might be acting fishy.

And then I'm sure they'd have watched exit film immediately b/c that would be a likely huge clue of not only where they had been and what time, but if anyone else was following them or acting suspiciously, etc.

Plus, it sounded like the people they were interviewing were the ones by Macy's. If they had thought they had been at the theatre, I'd think we'd have heard about theatre goers being interviewed.

But who knows...this is the 'add to the story and pass it along' type 'game' it feels like. No clue where it'll go next or if it'll make any sense! :floorlaugh:

Have we tossed around the possibility of Gianni having another someone else? Probably way too far-fetched...

  • #335
Thats a possibility but they spent so much time together it would have been hard to hide.

I still believe they were followed to the shopping centre and someone lay in waiting for them to leave.

Why them? Who'd be that mad they'd want them killed?

What would be the reason?

It wasn't robbery or sexual assault. I wouldn't think a thrill kill would be two people in a mall parking lot - people who were an easy target, not moving, etc.

I think this is the big question.

Based on many public comments about how close the brothers were, even if there was a splinter between them, i can't see it going that bad.

I suspect Ilona may have been at the wrong place at the wrong time as the brothers were targeted. Hence Gianni in hiding/missing.

What the motive is - I have no idea….business/family?

Anything is possible but I think this was a love triangle!
Even if it wasn't! Gianni could have THOUGHT something was going on between his brother and GF.
Jealousy is a horrible monster!

We see it every day on these threads!

They would have chosen a time when Ilona was not with them!
She was a target also as I see it!

Just saw this article, and while it doesn't add any new facts, there is a tone to it that I found interesting.

http://scoopsandiego.com/mission_va...cle_b7917a54-79c5-11e3-8a51-0019bb30f31a.html

I get the impression here that they are slightly leaning toward considering Gianni a person of interest. One snippet in particular says:

"Witnesses at the time told police that the suspect may have been a man around 5 feet 11 inches, wearing tan pants and driving a dark gray late-model Honda.

Police describe Gianni Belvedere, the missing person, as a white male, approximately 160 lbs. with a height of 6 feet 1 inch. He has blue eyes and fast-growing brown hair and may possibly change his appearance, police said. "

I find it interesting that they're using the original suspect description in the past tense ("may have been") as if they're thinking that's not really relevant anymore, and that police seem to have reason to believe Gianni may possibly choose to change his appearance, which implies to me that they think he's still alive and on the run (though that could be from fear instead of guilt).
