Gregory Downes Howells

Case Classification: Endangered Missing
Missing Since: June 17, 1997
Location Last Seen: Carmel Valley, Monterey County, California
Howells was last seen on the Rancho Canada Golf Course in Carmel Valley, California on June 17, 1997. He has never been heard from again.
Howells' tan Honda was located in the parking lot of the golf course the following morning. His wallet, credit cards, identification, and golf bag were inside the vehicle, as was the manuscript of his latest play, Lazarus. His golf cart, iron, and putter lay together near the 13th tee of the course, not far from his driver which had the sock cover removed. A search of the area yielded no clues as to his whereabouts.
Howells was a playwright and director at the time, and was married to actress/playwright Sherry Glaser. She told the media that she believed her husband may have staged his disappearance. She also stated that Howells had been depressed and had an alcohol problem prior to his vanishing, and may have sought an escape for himself, possibly by suicide.
Several of Howells' friends reported that they believed other factors were involved regarding his disappearance. It is unclear if he left on his own accord or if he was the victim of foul play. Howells' whereabouts remain unknown.
