A California man has been charged with murdering his estranged wife by shooting her in the head with a nail gun.

Richard Williams was arrested Saturday after spending five weeks in a hospital for nail gun wounds to his chest and abdomen.

Officials say Williams wasn't arrested immediately after the Oct. 22 incident because Nevada County would have been at least partly responsible for his hospital bills. Instead, guards were stationed outside his hospital room 24 hours a day, waiting for him to recover.
