DNA evidence confirms identity of suspect in a 1979 cold case

The Riverside County Regional Cold Case Homicide Team announced Wednesday that they have confirmed the identity of the rapist and killer in a cold case.

"The press release says Gonzalez was walking from her parents' house in Beaumont to her his sister's house in Banning when she was attacked and killed, and was found by an unidentified man, which deputies reported him at the time as argumentative, and called the Riverside County Sheriff's Station in Banning.

Five days after that, the press release said investigators identified the caller as Lewis Randolph "Randy" Williamson, and asked Williamson to take a polygraph test, which Williamson agreed and passed, clearing him of wrongdoing at that time.''

In November 2024, the Riverside County Regional Cold Case Homicide Team announced that they had identified the killer as Williamson, who died in 2014, using forensic genealogy to confirm his identity.

According to Esther's older sister, Elizabeth, the Gonzalez family reacted to the findings with mixed emotions.

"We are very happy that we finally have closure," Elizabeth Gonzalez wrote in an email published by CNN. "We are happy about it, but since the guy has died, a little sad that he won't spend any time for her murder."
