Jared Negrete was on a camping trip with his boy scout troop in San Bernardino County, CA. The troop was hiking to the summit on the 11,500 foot Mt San Gorgonio. Jared became tired 1,000 ft from the top and was told to wait behind until the troop came back through (according to UPI, he was last on Vivian trail). When they returned Jared was no where to be found. He was searched for by foot, horseback, and helicopters using infrared monitors to no avail. Only small wildlife was spotted on the monitors.

A search of the area turned up wrappers for beef jerky and a fruit roll-up, and Jared's disposable camera, but no sign of the missing boy scout. The Kodak disposable camera was found near a bush 200 feet from where he was last seen on Vivian trail. When the film was developed they found 12 snapshots including several landscape photos, then the last photo was particularly haunting... It was a close-up of Jared's face and is assumed to have been taken after his disappearance.

The haunting Last Photo

Several theories have circulated about the photo due to the mystery that surrounds it. A common one is that he likely used the flash as a light source. We may never know why he took the photo, but I hope to see his case get resolved so his family can have some closure after 26 years of wondering.

(I re-posted Jared's case after discovered his last thread was closed)
modnote: the other thread is a not discussion thread in forum part just listing missing children, not directly closed

A few articles on Jared worth reading:

........................

This has some interesting information - a PI claims to have leads indicating Jared was abducted (child trafficking?):

How could he be abducted in practically the middle of nowhere? My theory is that he felt down into some cliff while taking pictures

He wasn't abducted. He wandered off and most likely died from an accident, exposure or maybe a wild animal. I don't think his remains will ever be found unless someone stumbles on them by happenstance.

I found myself watching a video about missing hikers in national parks on Youtube and someone made a really interesting comment about that photo - I took a screencap and outlined the area in red.

If Jared was surrounded by a pack of wolves (maybe coyotes?) he would have little chance of survival.

It's incredible to think that they found his footprints, the camera and the candy wrappers but no sign of Jared.
I expect that come nightfall he tried to find a place to take shelter and got trapped or died from exposure.

It must be haunting for the family to know that his remains are out there somewhere.

So sad to think that he'd be 43 years old now. I, too, think he most likely died from exposure or accidental fall. Hopefully his remains are located eventually so his family can have some closure.

After 30 years, I'd say the odds of that are practically zero :(

It's so sad they didn't find him during the 19 days of searching.

Considering he abandoned his things (backpack, camera), maybe he left them behind to avoid the weight while climbing up, upwards to find a view and hopefully a formal trail. While attempting to climb up, he possibly fell.

Thus he wouldn't have gotten that far from his things as the crow flies, but maybe "far" elevation-wise.

I wonder how many days they continued the search after finding his things and footprints? How much they were able to search nearby both above and below his things?

This is purely all speculation on my part.

Thinking more about it, he could have purposely abandoned his things in a visible area so they'd be found and continued on and made it quite some distance away. Even nowadays it is often unsuccessful finding missing people in the woods.

I wish there was something to do for this case or even the "right" words to say.
