"Jenny Lin, a talented 14-year-old musician and student, was stabbed to death at her family’s home in Castro Valley 25 years ago in one of the Bay Area most famous cold case murders.

Each year, her family host a memorial service and candlelight march, making sure that she and the search for her killer remains in the minds of local residents.

“The recent arrest of the Golden State Killer (Joseph DeAngelo) for crimes committed 40 years ago boosts the family’s hope that one day the killer will be caught,” the Lin family said in a statement.

Jenny, a straight-A student at Canyon Middle School and played the viola, was fatally stabbed at her Palomares Hills home on May 27, 1994. A $100,000 reward has been in place for years for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person who killed her."

Case History

"Childhood is everyone’s chance to enjoy life, grow, and learn to contribute to society. For Jenny Lin, however, this time was tragically and brutally cut short. Jenny was mysteriously stabbed to death in her own home, located in a peaceful community in Castro Valley, California on May 27, 1994, two days after her fourteenth birthday.
Although the detectives in the local Sheriff’s department have worked relentlessly on this case, there has been no breakthrough and no positively identified suspects. The motive for the murder remains unknown. The killer committed such a flawless crime that there was very little information for the investigators to work on. The local police even brought in the FBI to help them with several aspects of the investigation. Specifically, the FBI did several laboratory tests and analyses to try to piece together the profile of the killer. But so far they have not been able to close in on anyone. There are still many unanswered questions — who and why would anyone commit such a brutal crime to such a kind and innocent child in a peaceful home in community? Was the person jealous of Jenny’s outstanding accomplishments or her parent’s successes? Was the person attracted by her beauty? Was it a hate crime committed against a successful immigrant family? Or, was it simply the act of a serial killer? These are some of many questions that constantly circle through the minds of Jenny’s parents and the detectives.

The Suspectatrickdaughter.”
This person was described as an adult male, about 30 to 45 years of age in 1994, between 5′ 8″ and 6′ 0″, thin with gaunt features.

The Alameda County Sheriff’s Department has not considered this person a suspect yet, but is requesting anyone who recognizes him or who witnessed this incident, to please call Det. Patrick Smyth at 1-510- 667-7721, or the Jenny Lin Hotline at 1-(855)-4-JENNY-LIN.

Assuming the authorities have determined that the perp is a man, he probably is, but i would not discount a young male or female teen. imo, speculation.

Oh this is such a horrible crime! I thought I had heard of it before and saw an interesting website. I finally found it - the Almeda County Sheriffs Office has the layout of the house and other interesting features. My computer died and I’m using my kid’s iPad and I don’t know how to link - sorry!

ALAMEDA COUNTY / Jenny Lin killing suspect named -- after 12 years / Convict serving life in Oregon has been focus of long probe

Thursday, May 25, 2006

Nearly 12 years to the day after a 14-year-old girl was stabbed to death in her Castro Valley home, Alameda County authorities on Wednesday said a convicted murderer serving three life sentences in Oregon is the prime suspect in the 1994 killing.

The announcement marked the first time detectives have publicly identified a suspect in the killing of Jenny Lin, but authorities said Sebastian Alexander Shaw has been the focus of their investigation since his arrest in Oregon shortly after Jenny was killed.

ALAMEDA COUNTY / Jenny Lin killing suspect named -- after 12 years / Convict serving life in Oregon has been focus of long probe

Jenny would have been 26 today. On May 27, 1994, two days after her 14th birthday, she was last heard from by a friend who chatted with her on the phone at about 5:15 p.m. Soon after, somebody forced her to disrobe, then stabbed her repeatedly in a bathroom on the second floor of her home.

Her father found her body about 6:45 p.m. after returning from work. Investigators said the killer entered through a broken window or sliding glass door.

Nothing was taken from the home, and authorities believe the killer may have planned to sexually assault Jenny but was interrupted. Investigators with bloodhounds tracked a man's scent through a field behind the family's home, and believe that's how her killer fled.

Shaw claimed in an interview with Portland police to have killed as many as 10 to 12 people. When asked if authorities are investigating whether Shaw was involved in the disappearance of other East Bay girls, Ahern would say only that authorities suspect him in Jenny's slaying.

"I'll leave that affirmative statement as it is," Ahern said.

When he was arrested in Oregon, Shaw had 🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬 and a "murder kit" in the car he is believed to have stolen in the San Ramon burglary, authorities said. The "kit" included a ski mask, surgical gloves, duct tape, knives, binoculars and plastic handcuffs used by police.

Prosecutors did not file charges in the San Ramon case, and it was not immediately known why.

Shaw is serving two life sentences for the July 1992 killings of Donna Ferguson, 18, and Todd Rudiger, 29, and the June 1995 rape of a Portland woman. DNA evidence obtained from a discarded cigarette detectives obtained after following Shaw linked him to the rape and double homicide, in which all three victims' hands and feet were bound with electrical and telephone cords, court records show.

No charges for suspect in Jenny Lin murder
PUBLISHED: May 23, 2007 at 5:43 pm | UPDATED: August 15, 2016 at 7:44 pm

CASTRO VALLEY — The Alameda County Sheriff’s Office said today that charges will not be filed at this time against the man suspected killing 14-year-old Jenny Lin.

One year ago, the Alameda County Sheriff’s named convicted murderer Sebastian Alexander Shaw as a suspect in the 1994 homicide. Shaw is serving three life sentences in Oregon.

Months ago, investigators submitted their reports to the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office to determine if there was enough evidence for an arrest warrant, said Sheriff’s Sgt. Scott Dudek.

After reviewing the reports for several weeks, the District Attorney’s Office determined that based on the present information, a jury would not convict Shaw for her murder

Although we were disappointed, we completely agree with their decision not to seek an arrest warrant on Shaw,” Dudek said.

Jenny died May 27, 1994 two days after her 14th birthday. Her father found her in the upstairs bathroom of their Castro Valley home. She was naked and had been tied up. She was stabbed several times in the abdomen.

Investigators believe that sometime between May 20 and June 14, 1994 Shaw burglarized a home on Broadmoor Drive in San Ramon, about 11 miles from where Jenny was killed. The burglar entered a bathroom window and took a six-pack of malt liquor, keys and a 1979 Pontiac Bonneville.

Although no charges are being brought against Shaw at this time, he remains the prime suspect in Jenny’s murder and the investigation continues. Dudek said.

Shaw was born Chau Quong Ho in Vietnam and left Saigon when he was 7-years-old. Upon reaching the United States, he lived in a refugee camp in Texas before joining his father in Oregon. He later lived with his aunt in Southern California.

Oh this is such a horrible crime! I thought I had heard of it before and saw an interesting website. I finally found it - the Almeda County Sheriffs Office has the layout of the house and other interesting features. My computer died and I’m using my kid’s iPad and I don’t know how to link - sorry!
If you can supply that link some time that would be wonderful. Would love to see the house and perhaps any photos from inside from the time of the crime. Interesting. The prime suspect got busted from DNA match on two other cases, yet on this no match to DNA. Was he lucky? This makes me believe they either did not for whatever reason collect any DNA from this crime scene. OR if they did, it was not his. For whatever reason i say they didn't collect any which is strange. Brutal crime no connectable DNA!!............She was Asian, and the PS is Asian. Can anyone tell was this a Asian community at the time?...........She very beautiful young lady, I figured sexual assault was a reason, and Alexa confirmed my suspicion that May 27th was a Friday................................The PS is still a suspect, even though no charges were filed. So i wonder what the connection was, that makes him such a PS for this crime when there is no DNA here to connect him to the crime like there was in the other two cases..............Ill comment more when i see the pictures from the link. And if this was an Asian community.........two days after her 14 th birthday, and killed within an hour of so after speaking to a friend on the phone, and the time her dad arrived home.......Between 520pm and 630pm that day. Still daylight. School may have been out for the summer not sure. Got in through a broken window or sliding door..???????? Was the window broken to have her open the sliding door to gain entrance i wonder. Would have occurred after the phone call or during. I still kinda find it hard to believe no DNA was collected to match against this PS or anyone else for that matter. It is like the place was cleaned up after a horrific murder. Of course the people that live in the house there DNA would be all over it so naturally you have to discount that. But the killers DNA was not found at this crime scene but they have a PS whom got busted on two cases with matching DNA to both........Yet on this one he got really lucky not to leave any, if he did it, which they have nothing solid to prove he did like in the other two cases.............I think about this awhile...................O, yes they said the killer planned to sexually assault here, so i take that as meaning she was not raped. Just tied up and stabbed to death...............Well i am sure with there investigation they discovered it was not a staged crime scene to make it appear someone was going to tie her up and rape her but got distracted from that plan, so killed her instead and left, and the killer was traced through the back by dogs through the field grass whatever. All early on persons close were naturally was cleared of any involvement. Family, friends, neighbors, boyfriend/girlfriend etc etc............Which leaves us with an unknown person whom enter her house one day to rape and kill her in an hour or so, then left without leaving any physical evidence of whom had done this....................I think more on this case.....................ADD ON I think now they did collect DNA but they didn't collect any STRANGER DNA.....any collected i bet was connected to persons living there and others whom over time visited and left it whatever. That makes scene..............ADD ON NUMBER TWO QUESTION. I will assume during the investigation they discovered the glass was broken from the outside and not the inside by looking at the glass fragments. OR, Does anyone know, was the glass already cleaned up before the LEOS arrived??????????????????

If I had to guess, and its just a guess based on nothing more than assumptions and speculations from what i have read here, i would say the killer was a lot closer to knowing the family, then some animal that got busted on two other cases from DNA matches from a discarded cig butt.

Thank you. :) And instead of adding another add on to my comment above, i will just leave it here...Right now, as I think about it. For just right nwo. I would say she knew whom killed her. And that's why she was murdered. Not murdered to keep from giving a description, but murdered so not to give a name to the LEOS. Thank you again for the link. Much appreciated.

I see your name i always call you Doc . Watching the VCR TAPE Now. Just wanted to come here and say if i was a betting man. And of course i am just speculating making assumptions from what i have watched and read here. That I think for right now anyways the killer was at the birthday party. And there DNA was probably collected at the house. But they were eliminated as being a suspect because there DNA was expected to be found there for whatever reason it would be.............Before i get a possible toss violation. I am not saying the immediately family did this. OK!!!!!!!!!!!!! Just someone that knows this family and had reason to be in and out of that house..........Thanks again for the links Dotr.

If the father was here right now. The one question I would ask is this. Did you get home earlier that Friday night than expected?? For whatever reason. Left work early, engagement cancelled, plans changed whatever. But did you get home earlier than you had expected too that Friday evening. .................Last. Those visual aids at the site are absolutely FANTASTIC!!!!!!!!!! So rare to have such visual aids in a cold case such as this.

Thanks for adding the link dotr! And I’ll just leave that “quicklime” typo in there because it kind of makes me sound like a murderer lol

Advances in DNA tech helping Jennifer Lin cold case detectives in Alameda County
''CASTRO VALLEY, Calif. (KRON) — Exactly 26 years ago, 14-year-old Jennifer Lin was brutally murdered in her Castro Valley home after returning home from school. No arrests have been made, but Alameda County Sheriff’s detectives are still working to crack the case.

Lin’s family held a livestreamed memorial event Wednesday night to remember the young talented musician and hold out hope that her killer will be found.

Sheriff Gregory Ahern spoke with KRON4 to give an update on the case and urge anyone in the Castro Valley community to come forward with new information. The Sheriff’s Office created a website dedicated to the Lin investigation and tips.

Some of Alameda County’s veteran crime fighters have been working on the investigation since 1994. New advances in DNA technology could provide the breakthrough they need.

Ahern said his investigators think that the killer touched objects at the crime scene and might have left behind traces of DNA that could not be previously detected.''

Girl's Unsolved Murder Prompts Family to Sift for Clues : California: Who killed Jenny Lin? In Castro Valley, friends and relatives of the 14-year-old band together and set up a toll-free hot line to try to solve the mystery.
''Investigators say they believe whoever killed the teenager broke in through a small window downstairs.

They also believe the killer acted alone, was familiar with the neighborhood and the family schedule and had targeted the girl.

The wounds “indicate that it was a very deliberate, very careful, very controlled attack,” Nelson said.

One puzzling incident is an encounter John Lin had at a commuter train station a few weeks before the killing.

An unkempt man approached him and said something like, “I have a deal for you; we have your daughter,” Nelson said.

Lin avoided the man and drove away. He got home to find both his daughters safe and thought little more about the incident until the murder. Nelson said he doubts the man had anything to do with the case, but the volunteer group commissioned and has circulated a sketch.

What Nelson would like to learn more about is a report of a man seen walking away from the Lin neighborhood carrying a blue sports bag with red straps and heading toward an athletic field. There was no activity planned that night on the field.''

Vigil held for 14 year old murder victim in 1994 cold case

Jun 18, 2022 rbbm.

June 17 2022
''Lin was found stabbed to death, just two days after celebrating her birthday. Friday marked the 28th year that the family has held a vigil.

"We like to keep our promise to Jenny to that we will find justice for her," said Mei-Lain Lin, Jenny’s mother. "Jenny’s killer is still out there, and we don’t want him or her or whoever to do it to other kids in other families, so we like to keep it in the public’s eye."

Each year, the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office offers any updates they’re able to share at the vigil. Advances in DNA technology are giving them new reason to remain optimistic that they’ll eventually be able to track down Jenny’s killer.

"We’ve taken some key pieces of evidence. We’ve used the M-Vac system. We believe we’re going to be successful in abstracting some cells," said Alameda County Sheriff Gregory Ahern.''

“We think about her and we ask ourselves, 'Is this what Jenny would want us to do?' And that's what keeps us going," explains Mei-Lian Lin, Jenny's mother.

In 1994, then 14-year-old Jenny Lin was murdered in their house in Castro Valley. Jenny's father found her dead body in the bathroom. But no one has found the killer.

”We are still pretty frustrated that after all these years, the case is still not solved. However, we are encouraged," says John Lin, Jenny's father.

Encouraged because new technology may have led to a breakthrough in the case, says Alameda County Sheriff Greg Ahern.

Sheriff Ahern says all the evidence has been reexamined with new DNA technology, which allows them to extract new cells, and has given them new leads.

Nearly 30 years ago, Jennifer “Jenny” Lin, a gifted musician and student, was stabbed to death in her California home. Now, police are banking on new DNA technology to help solve the decades old cold case

We have a couple of possibilities that we are holding close to our vest,” Alameda County Sheriff Greg Ahern told KGO, a San Francisco Bay area television station. “We want to make sure we don’t disclose too much to a potential suspect.”

Ahern told the station that advances in DNA technology has allowed them to extract a new profile, providing investigators with new leads to pursue.

Lin — a straight A student who played the viola — spoke to a friend on the telephone at 5:15 p.m. on May 27, 1994, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.
