Jennika Lee Suazo was residing in a drug rehab group home in Eureka when she died of asphyxiation. She was one of 22 residents. At first her death was deemed suicide, but further investigation changed that to homicide. DNA test results have finally been returned, after a three year wait.

On Dec. 8, the day before the fifth anniversary of Jennika Lee Suazo’s death, the Humboldt County District Attorney charged a man currently imprisoned for the attempted murder of a police officer with the Eureka teen’s murder.

Suazo, 18, was found dead by roommates at a sober living home with 22 people on the 300 block of P Street in Eureka on Dec. 9, 2016. Anthony Lee Hamilton — the man charged with the alleged premeditated murder — was also living in the residence. Hamilton is now serving a 40 to life sentence at Corcoran State Prison in Kings County after being convicted of shooting a Del Norte County sheriff’s deputy in 2017.
