Circumstances:
MP is 54 years old. She was last seen on Sunday July 24, 1983 at approximately 2100 hours by a neighbor. She was leaving her residence and said she was going to Reno, Nevada. She claimed if she had any trouble with her car, she would drive it off a cliff. She appeared to be under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

On August 2, 1983, victims vehicle was discovered, abandoned at the Sugarloaf Trail in Shasta County. The MP had attempted to drive/climb a very steep hill and had failed. Instead of easily backing down, the driver simply abandoned the vehicle.
Women's clothing and purse were on the front seat. There was evidence the MP had gotten out of the vehicle, smoked three cigarettes (Benson & Hedges brand). A short distance up the hill, she sat down and smoked another. Walked another 12 feet, ate two fruit bars. At this point the tracks ended and no further evidence was located. The MP was not found and she has not been seen or heard from since.

For the next five days and extensive search of the surrounding trail area was conducted using grid searches and scent dogs with negative results, the search was suspended.

The MP was in average health and it is unlikely she could have walked the distance to get to the nearest paved road (without getting disoriented) - which was 45 minutes driving time away from where the vehicle was abandoned. Ten miles away from abandoned vehicle is "Old Man Campground" accessible only by dirt road.

I wonder if they saved the cigarettes from the scene? It would be interesting to know if they could test them for DNA now to find out if Jeraline was actually the one who smoked them.

Its possible they did, I was thinking the same thing how do they know Jeraline smoked the cigarettes and ate the snacks. I kind of wonded if Jeraline wondered on to a pot field, those growers shoot first and ask questions later.

According to the above article there were witnesses that saw her get out of her car. It also says she was manic depressive and may have been suicidal. How sad. :(

Yes sad :(

There was a witness that seen her get out of the car in the middle of no where? The nearest campsite was 10 miles away from where the vehicle was found.

How could someones tracks end ?

Maybe she was picked up by someone in a car?
I was initially thinking it might not have been her that left the car there. What if two people stole the car from her and tried to take it back to their campsite? But they couldn't get it up the hill. So one of them waits by the car and smokes 3 cigarettes while the other walks up the hill with a cigarette and discards it on the way. But her being seen by a witness throws that scenario out (assuming the witness was telling the truth).

What doesn't make sense, however, is if there was a witness who saw her, why didn't they ask her if she needed help? According to the NAMUS account, she couldn't get the car up the hill and sat there smoking 3 cigarette before walking up the hill, sitting down, eating the fruit bars and smoking another cigarette. All this would have taken some time to watch unfold. So how long were the witnesses watching her and why didn't they talk to her or find out what was going on? Was there more than one person who passed her in a car while she was doing all this? Did they just drive by or walked on by her and she didn't try to flag them down or talk to them or anything?

I'm trying to make sense of the story. o_O
