This is weird - I tried to locate the Pine Root Spring campground through the Shasta-Trinity National Park site and it is not listed there.

You mean Geraldine Largay?

Yes I remember that sad case - and Jessica was in a national state forest park - and after looking at that network of roads I wonder if she became disoriented at some point looking for her car. Shasta-Trinity National Park is huge, I do not doubt it could be easy to become lost there.

Yes, on the Appalachian trail. I heavily investigated that case a while back. Very interesting and sad case.

Yeah, the road network is crazy. Even if she found her way back to a road, she might not have found her way out of there.

The road network is crazy. Here is my map - I tried to drop a pin where I think the campground might be.

ETA - darn it, no pin. But the campground does show up.

Maybe it is from being in Florida for 10 years now --

My husband and I are seasoned hikers - we've done the Grand Canyon (a small portion), our home state of CT, Arizona, and Colorado. Someday I would love to hike in the Adirondacks, and the NJ Pine Barrens.

The one thing different about hiking on trails in parks and preserves down here is that it is virtually impossible to stray off a trail into the "woods" - mainly because we don't really have woods in the sense that states like CA or CT does.

The heavy tropical undergrowth lines hiking trails - my husband jokingly calls hiking trails down here "corridors" because that is pretty much what they are.

Controlled burns are done routinely for the benefit of wildlife, to stimulate new plant growth especially wildflowers, and keep the lush tropical growth from reaching Amazonian heights.

If one has to answer "nature's call" and is hiking through the Myakka Prairie - good luck in finding a tree to the side with no sharp (ouchies) tropical plants under it, and one that is also out of sight for a little privacy.

Well.

It can be done, and the parks systems is pretty good at having available hiking maps for visitors.

So it seems there is some controversy over whether the doors of Jessica's car were locked or not.

Also, I can find no source that says the key was in the run position. Where did that come from?

In any case, I highly doubt she locked herself out. Wouldn't anybody who locked themselves out in the middle of nowhere pick up a rock and bust a window? I also wonder if she had a second set of keys that she routinely carried in her purse.

I don't remember the detail of the key being in the run position. Agree about the rock, unless she thought she could just easily walk back to the party? I've always wondered why on earth she went WEST after leaving it....

To answer my own two questions...

I thought I read on this forum that the key was in the run position. I just went back and looked, and all I can find is one person asking if it was possible that it was in the run position. So I guess I misread that. As far as we know, the key was in the off position, although that is just an assumption.

Secondly, unless we get some definitive statement from LE, I don't think we know if the car was locked or unlocked. All early reports say unlocked. However, Jessica's mother said those reports were untrue, that it was locked when they found it, but unlocked when they went back for it. So what does that mean? Were they mistaken at first? Or did it somehow become unlocked? Some are saying the cold weather could have unlocked it, but that seems highly unlikely. I just don't know what to believe.

I followed this case in the early stages - lots of conflicting information was given IIRC.

Someone a few page back mentioned that the car location was mentioned on social media. I found it in the Help Find Jessica RoggenKamp facebook group. I believe we are allowed to discuss content of these groups, are we not?

Mainstream media, as I linked earlier, has her on 30 Road south of 36.

According to somebody who was at the car, it was past Wildwood, up another road 15 miles. 30 Road is past Wildwood, so I'm assuming the car was 15 miles south on 30 off 36. That takes us past the campground I mentioned earlier, which is about at the 9 mile mark. Going 15 miles puts us around the spot where 30 Road crosses Texas Chow Creek.

So where is she headed?

Well, she is certainly headed into the remote wilderness. She is already in the remote wilderness, and she is headed into the even more remote wilderness. Is there any destination in particular? She does seem to be headed to some large mountains.

Map to follow...

In particular, she seems to be headed to Black Rock Mountain. I wonder if she's ever been there before? Or to any of these mountains.

If I ask google for a route from Wildwood, which is approximately where she left 36, to Black Rock Mountain, this is the route it gives me, which is down 30 Road, the road Jessica was reportedly on. It is entirely possible this is the route she was following. I marked her possible location, if she made it 15 miles, with the white pin.

So that's one possible destination. I don't think a person could go hiking there in the winter, though, could they? Wouldn't there be too much snow? Especially with no gear. In fact, I'm wondering how these remote roads are even passable for a Ford Mustang in December. Isn't there snow?

edit: After looking at the distances google is giving, I guess that pin showing Jessica's car location is a little further than 15 miles off 36. It should be a little closer to the middle of the route. Oh well. It's just a rough indication, anyway.

Thinking about this further...

Apparently there is an old fire lookout atop Black Rock Mountain. It would be an interesting destination. Whether or not a person could hike up Black Rock Mountain on December 10 would depend on the weather that year. Usually one would not hike up there in December. At the very least a person would need cold weather gear, as it would be cold up there in December.

If one enters 'Black Rock Mountain' as their destination in google maps, the route shown in my previous post is what you get, down 30 Road, which is the road Jessica's car was allegedly found on. There is a trail on the west side of Black Rock Mountain, so google is not wrong. However, the preferred route up the mountain appears to be on the east side. That seems to be the ascent route most commonly used. In order to drive to that trailhead, Jessica should have turned off 30 Road at around the 10 mile mark, onto 35 Road.

So was she headed to Black Rock Mountain? It is hard to say. I really don't see anywhere else she could have been going. It is possible she was simply driving into the wilderness with no real destination in mind.

Given that Jessica ran out of gas, her disappearance could have been an accident. She may have become lost while trying to walk out. However, there are a number of ominous signs. Why was she headed into the wilderness in the first place? It sounds like she had no supplies. How is it that she got a flat tire? How is it that she ran out of gas? Why did she leave the key in the vehicle? She seems to have had a lot on her mind.

In determining what happened, it is fortunate she had a chance encounter with the kind folks who helped change her tire. Through that encounter, we know that Jessica was alone and in control. Foul play is unlikely.

It does sound like this is the area she reportedly went to with her daughter. "Police said Roggenkamp is familiar with the area where police found her car and had visited the same area on Thanksgiving Day." (source) It would be very interesting to know precisely where she went on Thanksgiving Day. I'm sure her friends considered that when they searched for her.

Sadly, it is likely that a hunter or hiker will find her, eventually.

Do you know how far the campground is from where her car was found? Roughly

Still missing...

Bump for Jessica :bump:

Was just thinking about her this morning.

It's always been curious to me that the remoteness-middle of the night-so off the path from her destination, feels and reads like a suicide. But her own mother said voluntary missing. The middle of the wilderness is an awful strange place to walk away from your life to start a new one.

Just checking in to see if any new leads. Can someone explain to me why police use voluntary missing in situations like this? To me it seems really odd. How many cases does a voluntary missing person come home successfully? How many are found deceased?

The FB page for Jessica is reporting that Jessica was found safe. No other details yet.
