A member of the United States Army Reserve who left for a solo hike in Yosemite National Park and possibly to go kayaking was two days’ overdue and declared missing Saturday.

Joel Thomazin — a 31-year-old from the small town of Denair near Turlock in Stanislaus County — was planning to hike from Hetch Hetchy to Lake Eleanor and return to Hetch Hetchy, according to a post on Yosemite National Park’s Facebook page.

Hoping he will be found soon, and that he will be okay. What's going on out there?
A good friend of mine loves to hike Yosemite -- always by himself. I don't know which part, but he does have a favorite area. He's a bit clumsy at times; he goes every year, and I worry.
These two recent Yosemite incidents will make me worry even more about him.
I'm a big worry-wart...

For one thing - unprecedented numbers of visitors, to the point that the park had to create a reservation system for even a one day visit (lots of people evade it, but that's a different point).

It's super hot up there - even in the valley between Hetch Hetchy and Tuolumne (although cooler by the time a hiker gets to Tuolumne).

My daughter and son-in-law went to Yosemite two years ago. They are big travelers and have been in many large National Parks out west, even in the back country. But they still say that Yosemite was by far the most confusing place they'd ever been because nothing is marked well and what signs are there are confusing. My son-in-law is an experienced hiker and was in the military police in Iraq, and he found Yosemite very intimidating!

I hope this hiker is found alive, and soon!
