Pretty sorry *ss people. CM making $170,000yr and couldn't even afford to rent a lousy house with for a couple of thousand a month or pay $300 to get his "wife's"/girlfriend's car fixed.
Is there proof CM was making $170k per year. Have we seen tax returns?

Yeah i don't think it would of mattered where they lived with a gambling addiction like CM had it would of always been skid row eventually, IMO.

Didn't that email JM sent Merritt on the 1st. Feb. state he had been paid around $160k.?

I don't recall, but even if we assume that was true it does not represent "income". The amounts JM paid CM include a substantial amount for materials and supplies. Sheet metal and brass fittings are very expensive, as is the gas required to travel to locations for installation. Net income to CM would be closer to half that amount. imo

Do we know if Merritt did any other jobs besides the work he did with Joey?

Didn't he also have his own business i think it was called IDesign, or something like that?

I know he did at one time but not sure when he stopped doing business.

Have Merritt's financials been produced during the Trial?

But I believe there was testimony that that the defendant was ripping JM off by substituting cheap inferior parts and pumps. Merritts relentless greed is well documented and he surely frittered thousands of dollars of what should have been company profit.

So do you think he quit his own business when he got to doing the fountains for JM?

That would be my guess. It seems like Joey was able to keep him relatively busy and Merritt saw Joey as his gravy train and easy target.

He states in his pre trial statements that he had his own separate business that worked with EIP

Yes

See his pre trial interview

Merritt had his own business before he met Joey... it was IDesign.... he kept that business but at some point stopped doing custom orders of his own and only did the one's through EIP or Joey, I want to say it would have been in 2008? But he was still operating as "IDesign".

Yes, the State called an accountant, Scott Weitzman.

But I believe there was testimony that that the defendant was ripping JM off by substituting cheap inferior parts and pumps. Merritts relentless greed is well documented and he surely frittered thousands of dollars of what should have been company profit.

Are you sure about this? I thought Elva Fonseca testified that she thought Chase had used EIP pumps for his other custom orders, but I don't recall anything about cheaper parts/pumps? Joey supplied the pumps IIRC. That was at the beginning of their working relationship in 2007 when Elva worked there for a few months.

Ok, so let's say his net income was closer to 85k. In 2009, living in Victorville, 85k was a pretty comfortable income. Shouldn't have been a problem to pay a 400 dollar mechanic's bill, or keep up with one's rent.

Unless you were routinely taking out hundreds of dollars at the local Indian casinos to play poker every week.

Gina Watson mentioned the use of cheaper parts in the CNN interview. I don't recall if it came up in trial testimony.

snip

KAYE: Gina grew so concerned she warned Joseph that Chase was bad news.

WATSON: I did raised concerns about Chase that he would use materials that were cheaper or sometimes he would leave somebody high and dry without the fountain or without fixing it.

And Joseph really felt that he could control that aspect of Chase. KAYE: He didn't seem to have any concerns at the time?

WATSON: No. He really kind of blew me off.

If he was using the pumps Joey bought for EIP, on his own projects, then that is THEFT.

This sounds more like when Chase was doing his own custom designs?

Doesn't matter what you call it, Elva said she told Joey... Joey still did business with Chase for years after that.

Under normal circumstances, you would probably be correct. But it seems, according to testimony that he was equally adept at scamming materials and supplies. See Metro testimony.

Indeed, if he only recognized half of that as income, he probably should never have bought that wonderful home that ended up selling for about half the price, and leaving his significant other to barely subsist in a run-down trailer.

Unfortunately, NPD types are only interested in results that empower them personally.
