Thank you for that comment Cabo.
However, in my opinion, NO, they did not!
The murder of Rebecca in Coronado is another example of sloppy, inept, lazy police work here in San Diego, California.
Astonishing actually.
With the 3 detectives that I met at the McStay home "Dugal" inside the home talking to the families, was so..."whatever" as to the families questions. His favorite answer was, "Your guess is as good as mine".
When I went outside to have a cigarette. Dugals bosses were out there. One, having a cigarette.
Neither one of them were concerned about this missing family.
They were joking and laughing about other stuff.
Truly, they were very cavalier.
I will never forget these few minutes with my law enforcement.
In my opinion.
This branch of the San Diego law enforcement, screwed Summer and Joey's family, from day one.
It was all less important to them, then worrying about this missing family of four.
I guess, I didn't say this correctly.
Okay. Correctly.
They did not give a ****.
Degal, poo poed any and all suggestions by the family as to what could have happened.
His bosses were out front of the house talking and trading stories.
Then we have this trial.
That really is shocking KALI, :(
Makes me think of this quote
Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.

Agree, but i only blame the murderer. He had plenty of time to do the staging of the scene to deflect away from what really happened to the MCStay family.

Agreed. The laws of the United states don't allow LE to seize crime scenes

See for example Chris watts which is all on video

The officer making the care checkup has to wait for watts to arrive and needs permission to enter

Then multiple people 'contaminate' the crime scene where a triple homicide likely occurred in the last 8 hours

No one makes any big deal about this because the other crime scene all where the bodies were dumped was enough to convict watts

But he had the house in his possession for at least a further 48 hours IIRC

Thanks Tortoise for answering my question. What happen to the DT saying they were going to play 8 hours of the interview?

The transcribed words you have kindly provide is a big WOW!

Omg, CM is such a pathetic pathological liar he can't even keep his own lies straight.

CMs worst enemy is CM.

Imo
The judge ruled they were only permitted to play the parts of the interview relevant to the parts the state played - namely his answers to questions about the 4th and the 6th.

My guess is he took a polygraph that day, there were references to one that the defense redacted but no reference to whether it was that day or not, but I would guess that was included in the 8 hours.

What makes you say Mike? I didn’t.
So then the closet was not "rummaged through" or "contaminated and compromised" between the 15th and the 19th.

As a matter of fact DuGal was asked if there were any changes between the 15th and the 19th. He said he remembered it looking the same on both days. Day 6 Part 2.

When you were there, did you look around with a critical eye? I mean, at the time, were you thinking that it was possible something occurred in that house? I put myself into the family’s shoes and I think I would assume they left on their own. It seems almost too bizarre to imagine that someone absconded with a family of four.

I was vacuuming this morning and thinking about it. I can actually see, from SB’s point of view, wanting to clean up before outsiders come walking through and think my kids are pigs. I guess what I am saying is it is almost too unbelievable to even let it enter your mind that someone beat 4 people to death, packed up their bodies and drove away with them. This is not to say it shouldn’t have crossed the minds of LE though, although it certainly does not happen often, that’s for sure.

KALI, just reading your passionate post brings tears to my eyes for Joey, and his family.

They all deserved so much better than how the SD police treated them. Imo, due to their ineptness, and, nonchalant attitude from the very beginning is why this case languished in limbo for years.

All the signs pointed to foul play early on yet they simply didnt seem to care about the McStay family. How heartbreaking.

To this day I still don't understand how they handled such a serious case, and were so willing to accept they all simply left everything, and everyone behind.

As I've said repeatedly now, every detective I've seen who have been over missing person cases said they start the investigation as a possible homicide case until they can absolutley rule it out. That way they immediately secure any potential evidence for the future. They also said they immediately obtain a SW for the home,(inside/outside property) and bring in scent, and cadaver dogs inside of the home of the missing. But one of the first things they request from a judge is a SW for their financial records, and activities done either by the missing or to monitor any suspicious activity done by any other person. IE. CM! CM! CM! plain as day!! Did they really believe it was reasonable for them to walk away having almost 100K never to ever be touched by Joey??

How many darned red flags did they need to know this family never would have walked away from their home, family, and prosperous business? They had to be told by witnesses how much Joey, and Summer loved Joey's oldest son, Jonah, but they just walked away from him??

I can see them believing this about the deadbeat dad, CM, but Joey was known as a very loving devoted father.

The timing of when they all disappeared should have shouted to them, foul play foul play!!! They leave at the most promising time of their lives just when Joey's business was skyrocketing to new heights more than ever before???

SDPD should have immediately smelled a rat. It wouldn't have taken them long to determine Charles Merritt was that dirty rotten rat who had infiltrated the McStay home, and made them all disappear.

FGS CM was the only one inside of their home on the 4th stealing Joey's money!

The evidence they needed to determine foul play was right there the entire time glaring like a neon light!

Did they not investigate any of this compelling, and revealing evidence back then when the family vanished into thin air?

It was all there in plain sght for the SDPD to find. How could any so call LE investigator buy the unrealistic, unreasonable bull the Mcstays left on their own willingly when all the evidence showed otherwise?!!

How could they be so blind?

Honestly I think Don Knox or Tim Conway could have done a better investigation!! Ha!

Gah!

Imo

Was just reviewing Dr Rudin/Cognitech for his upcoming testimony. I found it interesting that Dr Rudin advertises Defocus/Deblur software on his website that works with blurred surveillance video images of faces or *license plates* and enables them to become clearly visible. I wonder if he did this on the truck in the Mitchley video???

Recover Detail Lost To Defocus Deblur - Cognitech
Defocus blur is constantly present in surveillance videos due to the limited depth of the field of a camera's optical systems. The defocus blur affects the ability to recognize faces and license plates.

Cognitech's Manual Defocus Deblur plug-in provides the end-user with an interface-friendly software tool that removes defocus blur without excessive 'ringing' artifacts. Traditional deblurring methods are associated with restoration errors (artifacts). Cognitech's artifact-suppressing technique removes such errors. Once the proper focus blur parameters are estimated by interactive real-time interface, and provided the image has sufficient resolution size, license plates and faces come into focus.

Here is a link to our Defocus blur interactive tutorial! Check it out!

I think it’s ridiculous that the cops thought the family had just up and left.

We all are very different people on here and all have different life experiences so maybe that’s why I think the way I do.

But a family of 4 who have just brought a new home and are in the middle of doing it up. A business that is only gaining more and more traction and zero signs from friends or family that anything was wrong points to the worse case scenario. They are cops it’s their job to investigate which they didn’t do from the get go unfortunately.

I very much respect your opinion and totally get what you're saying but I can kind of understand the other side as well. How can anyone let their mind go to a point of thinking that an entire family, including 2 very young kids, has been forcefully taken from their home? The idea of them walking away from their lives doesn't make sense but neither do any of the other scenarios that may have happened. My one caveat is law enforcement has seen everything and should be trained to think in a more cynical/criminal way. I think SDSO thought they were doing everything possible given the circumstances but in the end it wasn't enough. Hope this makes sense. I know what I'm trying to convey but...

Great post OBE. I have somthing else to add. At this meeting between Dugal and both families, Detective Dugal said TWICE that they had reviewed Joey's bank accounts, and did not see anything funny going on.

TWICE! Mind you, this was well after 10 days since they'd all been missing. So, Chase Merritt had already been heavily messing around with the account by then.

I don't know who they had look at the financials, but obviously, they were deaf, blind and dumb.

IMO

But I think we live in a world where we see daily rolling 24 hours news that a family being murdered makes more sense than a family just upping and leaving without a word to anybody.

The family had no reason to vanish and not a single sign pointed to them vanishing apart from a google search to Mexico which anybody who had ever entered the home could of done.

For some reason LE wanted them to have gone to Mexico hence why they thought the family on the video was them even though the family and friends who knew them all said it wasn’t. If LE had done their job at the beginning then this would of been wrapped up years ago. Chase was not that smart as we have seen, he got lucky because LE was stupid and didn’t do their job to the best of their abilities.

Very interesting. I downloaded one of those deblur programs when I was trying to clarify the accidental pics from TA's camera. I could never adjust the parameters to get anything clarified. :(

No doubt the real killers are blended among those some.

Nah, not really.

Thank goodness, CM.... the real killer of the entire Joey McStay family has been locked up in jail for many years now ...making him unable to prey on more innocent victims.

Ita! They came across as too lazy to put any effort into finding out what really happened to the McStay family.

I've never seen any investigation done so ineptly.

Its still the only case I'm aware of where they identified anyone by only a backview with no facial recognition required by them. FGS the police don't even do lineups for witnesses to ID suspects that way ..because it's utterly ridiculous.

They weren't even capable of applying simple logic, and common sense based on all of the surrounding evidence about the sudden disappearance.

LE often says when they begin any missing person investigation they have 'gut instincts' about whether it will turnout to be a homicide case or something different. So where was it with the SDSO?

When even lay persons knew something was definitely wrong about them being missing never returning or contacting anyone... then it shows how truly clueless this police department really was.

It's like they wanted to close the books, and move on.

What a terrible injustice they did to this poor family. Knowing the evidence was right there the entire time as to what had happened to them, why, and by whom will always infuriate me. It was such a slap in the face to all four, but to all of their loved ones as well.

It breaks my heart that Patrick was the one still out there searching for his son, daughter in law, and his two grandbabies before their bodies were discovered.

That's what I'm doing also. So far unsuccessfully. lol

LOL I lost that program and my whole collection of pics when my computer died after the flood. I figure I can find the as-original-as-we'll-ever-get pics on the net and pick it back up some time in the near future. It'd be nice if they would release the actual original pics and not copies of copies from a video stream. o_O

Exactly - we're having to work with screen captures of other screen captures. I too worked on pics in the Jodi Arias case. Will never forget that one. There are so many cases where details sort of hinge on a license plate. I've been working on the killer's vehicle in the Elizabeth Barraza shooting in Houston, an unknown if related vehicle in the Missy Bevers murder in Midlothian, TX and now with Merritt's vehicle (supposedly) in the Mitchley video.
