Found Deceased CA - Juan Carlos "Cookie" Hernandez, 21, Los Angeles, 22 Sept 2020 *arrest*

This is the LA Times article in Spanish. I put the part about the state of the car in Google translate (I don’t speak Spanish) to see if it gave a different connotation:
‘Lo extraño y todos estamos preocupados’: Madre mexicana busca desesperada a su hijo en Los Ángeles

Google translate:

I know Google Translate isn’t always very good at nuances in language. But, if in this case it is, from it I gather that the car was found looking normal, not stripped of any of its parts as happens a lot in stolen cars. But, none of Juan’s things were in the car, which I guess would be things such as his backpack, jacket (some articles mention a backpack and hoodie), and perhaps wallet, phone, etc.

to clarify. This is his mother. The car was recovered with all MY belongings inside. None of Juan’s things were inside my car when it was found.

Juan was last seen on 9/22 around 10:01 after leaving work. Not on 9/26 on the 3200 blocks of adams BLVd. That information is incorrect.

We here at Websleuths are so sorry that your son is missing. This is such a puzzling disappearance. So worrisome.

Is there an official group support page set up for Juan, as in a "Help Find Juan” page? I can tell you and your family and friends are doing a great job. Just the fact that you are here to help us by clarifying the situation shows how hard you are working to find him. Our hearts are with you.

There is a great wealth of information and caring people here at WS. We will try to brainstorm and help if we can.

thank you for all the support. We do have a group on Facebook called #helpmefindjuan it’s open for anyone to join.

Information gets lost in translation at times. Especially, when people don’t take the time to gather all facts. I did reach out to the detectives today to inquire on this and they promised to request a correction on this tomorrow morning. Any information or tips are appreciated. I won’t be able to rest until my baby (yes I know he’s 21 but he’ll always be my child) comes home.
Much love and blessings!

So, from this latest article, family and friends held a community support and prayer vigil yesterday at Martin Luther King Jr Park on Western yesterday. And, there seems to have been a potential sighting(!) in the downtown Los Angeles area, so there is some focus there. (Oh, I hope it was him!)

Yajaira, I think having the vigil was a wonderful idea. It helps get the word out, surrounds you with positive energy, and sends the message of hope. From the article’s photo it looks like you had a great turnout. You have many people supporting you in your difficult time, including here. We may be all be strangers to you, but we are a group of very empathetic people who care that Juan is missing!

thank you all for your support.

In this moment family, friends and community needed a boost as we are all saddened by this tragedy. I wanted to uplift everyone’s spirits and come together (as safely as possible due to covid-19) to give everyone strength and empower their minds, hearts and souls.

I will not stop and it’s thanks to the community, media and social media platforms that LAPD finally heard us all and took this case seriously.

Again, thank you everyone

Yajaira, reading your reply, you are such a thoughtful and amazing person to be thinking of others when I’m sure all they want to do most is take care of you and find Juan.

These are some questions that come to my mind that you likely have already looked into or thought about yourselves, but I’ll go ahead and ask them here. It may be you cannot disclose the answers for us here (or at least, not until you get verified insider status here), but they may be useful as points to ponder:

Did the security guard and coworkers actually see Juan get in the car and start driving away after work?
Have the surveillance cameras at his workplace been looked at for anything suspicious? How about cameras near where the car was found?
Was the car found at a location that would be within the normal route for Juan if he was on his way home?
The news say the car was running, so I assume the car key was in the ignition? ( I only have ever had old cars, so excuse me for not knowing how newer “keyless” cars work)
Was the car in a normal parked condition at a curb, or parking lot? Door open or closed? Unlocked? (Possible to have simply locked himself out, accidentally?)
As another poster here wondered: was the driver seat in a position that would seem right if Juan had been the one driving?
I think a news article said he saw his friends earlier in the day, before his shift at work. Did they say he seemed worried about anything, did they make plans for when they’d see him next?
Has his cell phone tried to be tracked (“Find my iPhone” kind of thing)? Able to get a record of his recent calls?
Have police done forensics on the car for fingerprints, etc?

unfortunately, his coworkers didn’t see him get into the vehicle. They just saw him walking away.
The location of the car was bit his normal route back home. Unfortunately, I haven’t received a report on how they found the car parked. It is a keyless remote but the fob was not inside the car. Lapd reported that the working girls on that street stated the car was left running there for hours. I can’t vouch on how true that is. Specially, as I’m only given certain information by the detectives.
Also, last week there was a news report showing law enforcement going into the business and tearing the door down. I have no information yet on what they confiscated from their employers shop

yes, he saw his friends earlier and I spoke to both of them who verbally attested that Juan seems find and he didn’t say that was troubling him.
His phone company won’t give us his last ping unless we give them a warrant.
We have absolutely no details on their investigation and findings yet.

Thank you, sillybilly, for verifying Juan’s mother so quickly.

I have found the #helpmefindjuan page Yajaira has told us they’ve created:
#HelpMeFindJuan - ORGANIZING GROUP Public Group | Facebook

And this Telemundo video is in Spanish, but I believe it shows what Yajaira wrote in her prior post about the police breaking down the doorway in order to get inside the dispensary.

As I said in my earlier post, I have no experience with the newer (and probably now very common) keyless cars, but I did a little googling and saw that it is not unheard of and is possible for a driver to walk away from their car while accidentally leaving the car running. And sadly, there’s been some tragic cases of some getting carbon monoxide poisoning from it.
Poisoning death of Highland Park couple points to alarming trend
For decades, American drivers generally had to do two things to get their car keys out of the ignition when they left a vehicle: Put it in park and turn off the engine.
But new keyless ignitions have disrupted that habit. Now, drivers can walk away with their key fobs and leave their motors running. Today's quieter engines also enhance the risk of motorists leaving their cars running without realizing it

So, I guess it might be possible that Juan parked the car and got out for some reason (is there a food, market or convenience store around there?) and accidentally left the car running. Then something happened before he could return to the car.

Those of you with these kinds of keyless cars, how plausible do you think it could be that Juan himself accidentally left the car running while he went away from the car to do something in the area where the car was found? Not very likely?

Welcome @yajaira hernandez, so very sorry that you found us under these circumstances. Your son seems like such a wonderful young man, I cannot imagine your worry at this time. I am glad that the police is taking this seriously. I hope that they are pulling all the security camera footage both from where Juan worked as well as from near where his car was found.

Unfortunately missing young women get a lot more attention than missing young men, but you are doing all the right things to bring attention to his case and there are many wonderful people here that will help. You and your family are in my thoughts and prayers.

Excellent article by the El Camino College’s The Union newspaper about Juan.

Community rallies behind ailing family of missing engineering student - El Camino College The Union

The family tried to view security footage from the dispensary and businesses in the area without cooperation. How selfish not to help!

Juan Carlos Hernández’s aunt visited VIP Collective LA, the dispensary he was employed at, the day after he disappeared but said the workers were unhelpful. When she asked about their security camera footage, they told her it deleted itself after 24 hours.

“I went to apartments in the corner, businesses near the area and they wouldn’t want to give information about their footage,” Mendoza said.
