It was an adventure into California's Lost Coast. Now, two friends from San Francisco are missing

The 27-year-old San Francisco nurse and her 43-year-old friend and landlord took off from the Gnoss Airport in Novato around 6:20 p.m. Oct. 24 in Winfrey’s red and white Piper Arrow plane. It was the day after the Kincade Fire started in Sonoma County, and from the air, they posted videos of the blaze on Instagram. They dined at the Gyppo Ale Mill restaurant around 9 p.m. in Shelter Cove.

Then, somewhere along California’s Lost Coast, they vanished.

They were apparently on their way back to the Bay Area when the last signal from their plane was received, off the Mendocino County coast between Rockport and Wheeler.

...the search effort was reinvigorated Thursday morning when a friend of Winfrey received an attempted FaceTime. Rescuers attempted to pinpoint the location it came from.​

Authorities Call Off Lost Coast Search For Missing San Franciscans

The air and sea search for Justin Winfrey and Kayla Rodriguez — a San Francisco nurse and pilot whose plane went missing off California’s Lost Coast last month — has been suspended, family members announced Tuesday.

Last night, according to a family member, they “got final radar data from the Airforce that confirms that the plane did nosedive into the ocean around the location of the last radar ping. Likely spatial disorientation given how dark it was.”

Flying in the dark, I wonder what was so important to not wait till morning. Our father was an experience Naval aviator with combat experience and he had no desire to even fly a single engine plane over the swamps of south LA, let alone over the ocean. I wonder what this guy's experience was with flying on instruments.
