Kevin Van Streefkerk was booked into the El Dorado County jail on five charges including intentional murder and assault of a child resulting in their death. Streefkerk is not eligible for bail, the sheriff’s office said.

The alleged abuse happened Saturday, and the child died in the hospital the following day, Father's Day, according to the infant's grandfather on the mother's side.

Streefkerk works at the California Governor's Office of Emergency Services as a technician involved in the maintenance of radio equipment and has been employed by the state since 2016, according to the agency.

"We are shocked and saddened to learn of the circumstances around this event," a Cal OES spokesperson said in a statement. "We are coordinating closely with the law enforcement agencies on their investigation, and it is our understanding that the alleged events occurred outside of his capacity as a state employee."

He was also a former tennis coach at Mesa Verda High School from August of 2022 to November of that year. He is not currently employed by the San Juan Unified School District.

Absolutely heartbreaking. According to lawandcrime.com probable cause was determined during the course of the investigation. Oddly enough, he was also an emergency services worker as mentioned above. As of June 2023, the investigation remains ongoing. I have seen similar cases where the perpetrator suffers from schizophrenia, however, I see no mention of mental illness or whether he had other children. There is yet to be any statements about the mother's level of involvement that I could locate. This is just the type of case to bring about anger-stricken grief. I hope answers will continue to surface on this one.

Rhetorical question: How does any man beat a 5 week old infant? His fist is nearly as big as an infant in the fetal position.

"He was booked in the El Dorado County Jail on charges of first-degree murder; assaulting a child resulting in death, murder, or manslaughter; and enhancements because the infant's death was allegedly intentional and especially heinous."

Per the Sacramento Bee, the victim's grandmother, Sharon Kavanaugh, compared the abuse to "the worst horror movie, but you cannot change the channel.”

Alya's biological mother, Amber Kavanaugh, told Van Streefkerk in her own statement, “All I see is evil. I don’t have any remorse for you," the outlet reported
