CHICO, Calif. - Chico Department Released new information about the police chase and shooting that left two people dead Thursday. Investigators said they found supporting evidence that a man kidnapped a woman at gunpoint and fired his handgun at her in the 2700 block of Eaton Rd. on Wednesday morning around 8:45 a.m.

Police said the suspect left with the woman in his vehicle and shot the woman while he was driving. Officers tried to pull over the vehicle near Highway 32 and Meridian Rd., but the driver kept driving. The vehicle stopped on the road near East 5th Ave. and Palm Ave.

Police said the driver shot himself before being contacted by law enforcement. Officers found both people dead in the vehicle. Chico Police Department said law enforcement used loud distraction devices while attempting a hostage rescue of the victim, but law enforcement did not fire any firearms during the incident.

UPDATE: 4:15 P.M. CHICO, Calif. Chico State has confirmed that 21-year-old Athena Passidakis was a student at the university. Passidakis was a health services administration major attending Chico State since the Fall of 2023.

Chico State President Steve Perez issued a statement to students:

"Dear students,

It's with deep sadness I share the news that health services administration major Athena Passidakis was killed Thursday in a shooting incident in Chico that police believe is connected to domestic violence.

Passidakis has been a member of our campus community since fall 2023 and was poised to graduate this spring. Her faculty describe her as well-liked and respected among her tightknit cohort. This semester, she served as an intern at Butte Home Health and Hospice.

According to professor Richard Narad, who taught Passidakis in three classes, she was a hardworking and dedicated student whose confidence grew immensely during her two years in the health services administration program. He noted her loss will be felt greatly among her peers.

If you have been impacted by dating or domestic violence or are looking for support, please know that help is available both on- and off-campus.

Police received tips about an out-of-state car being the source of the gunshots. They approached the car at a stop sign, where the murderer fled. A chase ensued and the murderer shot Athena once more to end her life. When the police caught up, the murderer shot himself resulting in his own death.
