What if they find her car and she’s not inside? Any thoughts of what next steps might be?
She's going to be inside, but if she wasn't, that would obviously point to abduction/homicide.

That's precisely why they've handled this in a way that allows for both scenarios (accident/foul play). You only get one chance to get a criminal investigation right, so they'd be set up to fully pursue that angle.

This makes sense as well. It’s the next simplest mistake she could have made- missing her way off the expressway and trying to turn around somewhere. Dark, late, perhaps drunk, on her way home but misses a turn…

LE may also have some information about possible destinations, such as after parties, in that area.
Donner Lake is a long wrong turn. Other side of Truckee. If she was there IMO she was there with others. JMO

We, the public, don't know what time that party ended. Does LE? I don't doubt that after interviewing 100 of the 200-300 they at least know of someone who left at 1 AM or later but even they may not even be sure. At this point, I'm not sure what giving out that info helps her case unless it prompts someone to provide better info in a tip. I'd still like to know. The last info I've seen is that she was last seen at about 12:30.

We have no way of knowing how much or how little, but you can be sure that LE are holding back information. Even when they publicly make statements to the contrary, they always know more than they share with the public. JMO
Of course they are reserving some information—not the least of which is in part because so many of the folks close to the case are minors. But IMVHO, they have barely provided enough information for the public to jog their memories so they have any “aha!” moments or recall seeing anything. Sometimes video/visual cues/other information can help remind people of what they saw/heard that may be relevant.

MOO, of course—they have their reasons.

One of my questions is whether there was anyone else with Kiely at the convenience store where she was last pictured wearing the black body suit and green dickies pants. Iirc they weren’t saying who was with her or what was purchased, but could be wrong.

And even if she is inside it could still be something other than driving in by accident. OD? Homicide? Either way, if the car is found we're a big step closer to finding out what happened. As much as it would leave us still in the dark, I'm hoping AWP doesn't find it.

It is very possible that one or more persons have come forward since then, with new information. I feel like AWP's search beginning where it did was based on some information they and LE have, that we do not. JMO

@OldCop, Thread6, Post#43:
"They [AWP] also went to search the 2 small ponds that she would go by on the road to her house, but said they were too shallow. They then went to Boca.... They were searching waters that could or would be on her way home. They then went to search another lake that may have been the scene of other parties that night."
RSBM
With that the vehicle can be driven out into any number of places out of sight. Drive it a few hundred yards to a half mile off the road and under trees and it may be months before it is found by accident.
RSBM
This is a back road from Prosser Reservoir to Reno. Select bicycle to see the route. It goes right by Stampede. AWP said Donner Lake is clear and the the smaller ponds near her house. So there’s a lot of info LE has not released. AWP also said there were multiple party sites.
RSBM
My two cents. I consider alcohol to be much worse that pot, although high-THC pot makes people weird and paranoid. (But impaired in a different way than alcohol, and usually, not that aggressive). As to other substances, they might have synergistic, or sometimes even opposing, effects, but again, often people don’t even know what they are given. This is the problem of the parties. Participants bring whatever they can get, and end up mixing unknown substances.
RSBM
Connecting dots by quoting other sleuthers!

IMO: A large roving party of teens and young adults, went into the wee hours of 8/6, moved from Prosser to perhaps Stampede (another lake / campground) then possibly on to Reno (a casino, late night city). Likely a smaller and smaller set of participants as the night went on. KR may have been swept up with the crowd long into the night, either voluntarily (having fun, hanging with older people, who knows about substances, etc.); or involuntarily (maybe someone was driving KR around in her car as KR became progressively more under the influence.) I think the night ended for KR with an accidental overdose and either she parked her own car off the beaten path or someone else did, with her in it.

And I agree with others who have stated, that until we learn more facts from LE / AWP, etc., not much more I can do or say.

ETA: OldCop's statement

Maybe KR asked for the later time for curfew because she was going to go to one of these other gatherings, placing her a further drive from her home?
Maybe KR and SS were already driving back and forth to these other gatherings that night?
Was one of these parties where KR was from 6-10ish, BEFORE the grad party at Prosser?
Was KR checking on a ride for SS because they were each at a different campsite?

In my mind, I have been imagining this "party" with fire rings- but no fires allowed, right? So is it pitch black at this site after say 10pm? Are people using flashlights or wearing headlamps? Are there a few overhead lights from the campground? Last full moon was 8/11... was there moonlight? If I imagine it really dark, then it is easier for me to imagine people not seeing much, esp where a paricular person went or when they left, and cars in complete darkness are less recognizable, IMO.

The quarter moon the night of 8/5 set at 12:21am on 8/6 (source cited up thread). So it was pitch black dark by 12:30am.

I just binged the previous 4 threads & sort of wild that after 2 weeks there are only 11 public, verified LE facts (but ofc, we only know a tiny bit of what LE knows. thank you @RedHaus for your list) my thoughts:

I don’t buy that Kiely took a wrong turn & ended up in Prosser Lake. Yes, that’s something that could happen to someone not familiar with the area & that road/boat ramp scares me but she was familiar and I don’t necessarily buy that she was too drunk to not know where she was going. She was sober enough to (supposedly) text her mother and sober enough to care to call SS about driving her home.

I think she followed other cars out of the area and ended up at an after-party. I think a clue to this is LE noting her gold jewelry and the sweatshirt she was wearing that night (LE confirmed they have video of her wearing the sweatshirt.) Also, @rudegirl just brought up a great point: Why was her ex-boyfriend & other friend (sorry, just forgot her name) in Reno searching for her - Did she end up at an after-party in Reno?

I don’t think it’s strange that we haven’t heard more firsthand accounts about her at the party (either pictures or interviews.) These are kids/young adults thinking about their futures - they’re not going to reach out to the media, they will reach out to LE; my thought is LE has some of these stories & doesn’t feel we need to know about them to help move the case forward at the moment. I also don’t find it strange that there isn’t much on social media in regards to public pictures - underage kids aren’t going to post incriminating evidence.

I loved @flckrct idea that she turned her phone off after last text to mom to buy extra time (to possibly go to an after-party) and that would make sense with the timing of the last ping — but then I was reading that the phone could still ping even after being shut off? So the last ping still doesn’t make sense to me, as in the time & location don’t add up.

It was reported that her laptop was in her car - I wonder if that can be traced?

All MOO & Thank you all for the maps & pictures & great insight.

Interesting that the number of personnel assigned is down to 7 today, IMO. (Yesterday it was 60.) Any idea why?

That seems to be pretty standard in a case like this. There tends to be a great deal of activity initially (searching, questioning witnesses, gathering potential evidence), and then it tapers off.

Glad to see they're still performing aerial searches though.

LE have described and shown photos of Kiely and of her Honda CRV since the very initial report of her disappearance. They showed pics of the jewelry that they think she may have worn, including a long rope necklace. They have described and shown the pic of Kiley, on store surveillance, wearing the clothing that they think she wore to the party. They later described and showed a picture of the Lana del Rey hoodie that they thought she may have had with her, and when they had video evidence of her wearing the Odd Future pink and white sweatshirt, they showed a picture of that sweatshirt as well. They are not going to release the actual video to the public, because in addition to the likelihood that it may show innocent people, including minors, there is always the possibility that it may be used as evidence in a future criminal or civil case, if it shows her engaging in any illegal activity with other people she may have been interacting with. Same situation with the still pic from the surveillance. There indeed may have been someone else with her, but until she is found, and once she is found, that may be something that would be part of any investigation.

People that already know Keily probably do not need visual reminders to jog their memories, and the information released by LE should be enough to jog the memories of others who may have seen her. That pink and white sweatshirt was probably relatively easy to spot, even in lesser light. I don't think people need their memories jogged at this point. They either saw her, or didn't, and if they did, and have information that may be helpful to LE, that they have not yet shared, they need to speak up. JMO

One more thought:

This sweatshirt is still missing as well. It is unique, and personally I think either a guy or a girl would wear it. It is also dark. The "Odd Future" hoodie would be more visible at night.

I wonder how common it is?

Edited: a quick search looks like it was once sold at Urban Outfitters.

My guess is even if she was not wearing it at any point in the evening, it will probably be found inside her car if and when it is ever recovered. JMO

I'm wondering if they think someone with her could be wearing it, and/or if she could have changed into it because it is dark? Just exploring the voluntary missing angles while we wait

Probably going too far out there, but the rest of her outfit was dark and would have made her less visible at night.

She's going to be inside, but if she wasn't, that would obviously point to abduction/homicide.

That's precisely why they've handled this in a way that allows for both scenarios (accident/foul play). You only get one chance to get a criminal investigation right, so they'd be set up to fully pursue that angle.
There was a recent case though where a missing family was found in a river (can't remember the case)...where the wife and two children were found inside the vehicle, but the dad was found outside of it. Got out through an already open window but succumbed anyway, or floated out somehow?

Might Kiely have known others who DID attend Hot August Nights, other than her Mom? Her mom still went, right?

What do we know about Hot August Nights?

Could there be older contacts linked to that even somehow? I keep wandering back to how close Reno is, how Jagger, Kate & the other friend went to Reno to search, etc.

  • #120
Yup, I agree with all of that. Although abduction is astronomically unlikely IMO, the only person with a reason to send a text like that would be someone close to her. I think its an incredibly safe bet that she did in fact send that message.

To your last point, I believe any break will come in the form of her vehicle being found in a body of water. I have no reason to believe anyone actually saw anything that will lead them to her location, nor do I believe anyone on the internet will be able to help. If anything, I'm sure they're the ones sending in the majority of the tips, all of which will prove pointless.
Agreed. I have thought since the beginning that she is sadly in her car, and in the water. JMO
