GUILTY CA - Killer targeting the homeless (3 dead, 2 hurt), San Diego, July 2016 *Arrest*

  • #281
It's probably heartbreaking for Guerrero's mother that she couldn't stop this from happening no matter how much she tried to help him. She's stuck having to accept what he did, if proven guilty, and wondering if she could've done anything to stop it. I feel for her in that respect.

Regarding the homeless population, I think we tend to want to look away, but it's right in our faces everyday now. We have to try and see it from both sides.

This case, and the homeless subject coming up on the news so much lately, has made me take a closer look searching for new solutions. Wow, I can't get over the numbers as I look into the homeless problems and what's being done and not done.

There were 8,692 persons who were homeless in San Diego County on January 29, 2016 according to the San Diego Point-in-Time Count. This represents a decrease of less than 1% region wide from 2015

because the cost of living is very high. not everyone is smart enough to get an ivy league degree. blue collar jobs aren't what they were anymore, many jobs are outsourced to foreign countries.

also Because some people just don't want a job or ever have anyone tell them what to do other then themselves. Not to mention the drug statistics within the homeless community

  • #283
That would be a problem anywhere within the homeless community, however I am referring to the homeless community specifically in ca. I live in ca, in San Jose which has the same issues as San Diego, and my mom and sister live in sd. I have always worked and am one check away from homelessness myself and I'm sure I am not the only one. When rents are 3000 and 850k to buy, it is a struggle even for the middle class never mind the working poor.

40% of homeless people work, about the same percentage are disabled. Many are families with minor children. Having a job doesn't get you out of homelessness these days. Many of the homeless are working poor who can't afford housing.

Exactly.

And while the working poor qualify for section 8, the wait list in sd is 10 years. Pretty much the same here.

Arraignment today, but criminal proceedings are on hold until Guerrero undergoes a psych evaluation. Some info gathered from the news video reveals, though Guerrero does suffer mental illness, these crimes were planned and organized.

Further GRAPHIC info is that he used railroad spikes as weapons on his victims driving them into one man's sinus cavity which would've left him blind; another man had railroad spikes in his head and chest. LE, upon Guerrero's arrest, found he had similar railroad spikes in his backpack and in a bucket at his home.

Two people, possibly his parents, attended his arraignment, but made no comment to the reporters.

Jon David Guerrero, the man accused of attacking and killing several homeless people last month, has been ordered to undergo a psychological evaluation. NBC 7's Rory Devine has more.

This is just disturbing. I'm so grateful that he's locked away...

Reminds me of the murder of the homeless man in Brett Easton Ellis's American Psycho (a superb book I wish I hadn't read).

Just wanted to add that (I heard on the news) LE also found some of the victims' IDs in with those RR spikes and ties.

Glad they caught him.
Spikes. Yikes.

Yikes! It's gross and scary to think these men were innocently sleeping.

The news said there were rocks and railroad spikes in a bucket in his apt. They wondered where he got the railroad spikes. His first killing was right by the railroad tracks with rocks alongside the tracks. Do you think he pried those spikes out of the tracks?

The details are chilling-- spikes, some kind of hammer, plus he set them on fire sometimes. What he did to these sleeping homeless men is so cruel. He planned these murders. He was getting away with it for awhile too. I'm not sure LE would have caught him when they did if he hadn't pushed it with that last attack.

Mentally ill, but smart enough to hide that part of himself and just keep killing. His family and people in his apartment building didn't seem to see this side of him. His mother sure didn't believe it at first. I imagine she might blame herself some for not seeing he was spirally down, but I think he knew how to hide his demon side.

Me too, relieved and glad they caught him. It's too bad three men are dead. I hope the injured victims can recover, and will be offered help to not have to be homeless again.

Warning - the Graphic details in article and video I won't post.

Mental competency evaluation ordered for SD homeless attacks suspect
http://www.cbs8.com/story/32601103/...ation-ordered-for-sd-homeless-attacks-suspect

At Jon David Guerrero's scheduled arraignment, Deputy Public Defender Dan Tandon told Judge Frederick Maguire that the defendant was "severely mentally ill" and he doubted his client's ability to understand the charges against him.

The judge ordered the competency evaluation and scheduled a hearing for Oct. 7.

Deputy District Attorney Makenzie Harvey objected to the judge's decision, alleging that Guerrero demonstrated `extreme planning" in the crimes and that he "was not a person suffering from a disorganized mind."

I underlined railroad ties. Where'd he get them?

When Guerrero was arrested July 15, three railroad spikes and identification from two victims were found in his backpack, the prosecutor said. A search of the defendant's apartment turned up a bucket filled with rocks, railroad ties and railroad spikes, Harvey said.

Guerrero got on the elevator with him! It doesn't sound like the man actually recognized him from the surveillance photo of the suspect or report it to LE. Too bad, might have saved a life plus he would've gotten the reward money.

http://www.latimes.com/local/lanow/la-me-ln-sd-murder-suspect-20160807-snap-story.html

"It was early July and a serial killer was attacking homeless men in their sleep.

Patrick Brady walked past a surveillance photo of the suspect tacked up near the elevators in the lobby at Alpha Square, an East Village apartment complex for homeless and low-income people. When the elevator doors opened, Jon David Guerrero walked out.

...That day in early July, Brady entered the elevator. As the doors closed, Guerrero suddenly stuck his head into the elevator and jumped back inside. He had been acting strangely over the last few weeks and was covered in sweat, Brady said.

“Either he was high or he had just done with one of those killings,” said Brady, 55."

I bet Guerrero got off the elevator, saw his own picture, then dove back in the elevator. :-/

The life of homeless murders suspect David Guerrero
A Coronado native, Guerrero’s grubby getup in high school led to the nickname Grubbit. Former Coronado High School classmates said he was often shoeless, shirtless and dirty. He liked to surf, and hung out with people who smoked pot and did other drugs, old classmates said.

After high school, Guerrero, who graduated in 1995, was in and out of Coronado until he moved away around 2000. Before he left, he had a child with a Coronado woman three years younger than him. Former classmates said he's never been a part of the child’s life.

(...)

Guerrero has lived in an independent living facility, and, more recently in downtown San Diego. He lived at Hotel Metro, a low-income housing project, for about two years. Residents there dubbed him "Farmer John" because he grew marijuana in his room. At the time he had a vehicle, provided by his sister, and seemed content.

(...)

Dameon Ditto met Guerrero at Metro Hotel, where the two only greeted each other in passing. It was at Alpha Square that the fifth-floor residents became relatively close, particularly after Guerrero began taking Ditto’s art classes, which are free to residents, in April. Ditto described Guerrero’s art as “dark.”

His artwork depicted “skeletons, black mountains ... Some stuff that scared me after the fact,” Ditto said. “I didn’t really think much of it at the time.” Guerrero showed a particular creative interest in rocks, turning beach stones and shells into Flinstones-like car figures, Ditto said.

To fashion the handmade cars, Guerrero presumably used a large hammer-like tool Ditto saw him carrying.

“I figured he was using that to chip away rocks,” Ditto said, adding it was customized with tape. “It seemed like he bought it in a certain way and then fixed it to a way he was comfortable using it.”

On Tuesday, Deputy District Attorney Makenzie Harvey said Guerrero is suspected of using a hammer and railroad spikes to kill or maim the five victims while they were sleeping.
