This is insane.

The defendant commits the crime in 2016. Then delays the trial until 2022 (even accounting for Covid, there were systematic delays on the part of the defendant).

He is convicted in 2022 of Second Degree Murder- probably need to give alot of credit to the defense attorney as the DA had emphasized that he wanted Murder 1 due to the circumstances).

It is now 2023, and the defendant still has not been sent to state prison... .

Yes, but its the county jail- and maybe even a city level "lock up".

Though I don't imagine that LA county jails in particular are fun places to be, they offer far better environments than California state prisons were everyone is a convicted felon, everyone is possibly dangerous and racial / ethnic gangs govern all aspects of daily life.

Likewise when I worked in neighboring Orange County as a para legal years ago, city level "lock ups" (run by the county, but with largely non felon and non violent types being kept there temporarily for trial, sentencing, bail arrangements) had a reputation for fewer rules and more work opportunities.

Thus, relatively pleasant living arrangements and the chance for somebody like the defendant to be a- or the, senior "Big Fish in a small pond". Lots of things could change for him in state prison.

Not finding any articles on his motions hearing on 7/28/23 - but the court site has this - hopefully it WILL not be moved this time. It was changed 3 times already....
