Could answers be coming in Kristin Smart's disappearance?
[...]

Kristin’s mother, Denise Smart, said she recently has been contacted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and told to be ready for a development that might bring closure to her 23-year nightmare. Denise said she was told by authorities, “Be ready. This is really going to be something you don’t expect. We want to give you the support you need.”

The FBI also suggested she secure a family spokesperson and the family “might want to get away for a while.” What the FBI didn’t say is when this development might be announced.

[...]

Denise Smart said she never has harbored more hope, even more than in 2016, when the FBI and the Sheriff’s excavated a Cal Poly hillside following a tip that proved to be fruitless.

“When they did the big dig, I had no anxiety,” Denise said. “I said she’s not there.”

But now, there is belief the end may be near.

[...]

Kristin Smart has been a missing person longer than she was known to be alive (she was officially declared dead on May 25, 2002). She was bright, intelligent and motivated. In May 1996, the then-freshman reportedly was escorted to her dorm residence by three students after an on-campus party.

[...]

“I believe that Paul Flores is responsible for her death and I believe that he knows where she is currently located,” Lambert said. “There is no doubt in my mind.”

[...]

“As I hope I made it clear in the podcast, there is just such overwhelming circumstantial evidence in this case,” Lambert said. “I don’t think they focused on the wrong suspect and I don’t think they had tunnel vision. I think there were many, many things that pointed to this person.”

Lambert has shared some of his findings with the Sheriff’s Office, and after past interview requests were denied, his next podcast, the seventh in the series, due for release later this month or early next month, will be a sit-down with two San Luis Obispo County sheriff’s detectives.

“It’s probably imminently going to break I would say within a month,” Denise said. “Something’s going to happen.”

“ this is really going to be something you don’t expect” say the FBI. That’s a strange wording if they have found her body ?

Interesting. I wonder if the cause of death could now be seen as “accidental”, I can’t imagine what this poor family is going through.

That is strange verbiage.
Maybe they got a recording of Paul Flores confessing to someone.
Maybe they've decided to charge him with murder even though Kristin's body hasn't been found.
Maybe they linked Paul or Ruben Flores to a different sexual homicide.

The wording “this is really going to be something you don’t expect” makes me think they have another suspect altogether. Maybe someone confessed, took them to where they disposed of the body and it was NOT Paul Flores. That would be something she didn’t expect.

Could she be alive? It completely different suspect? What a strange thing to tell her family.

The known evidence against Paul Flores is overwhelming, but it's possible that a second suspect confessed to being an accomplice (by helping Paul relocate the body, etc.). If Kristin's body had been found, that information wouldn't be kept from Kristin's family even for one day.
Maybe Paul is a necrophiliac and he kept pictures of Kristin's dead body. If those were found, then they could be used to charge Paul.
We have never learned what detective collected the blood-stained earring from Paul's mother's tenants. Maybe the FBI discovered that he was a friend or relative of Paul's mother and helped destroy evidence.

I live in SLO County, BIG buzz locally!!

“It’s like, ‘Can you give me the flight plan?’ ” Denise said. “When is this happening?”

I hope the FBI doesn't keep the Smart family in suspense much longer. I'm truly mystified as to what they said to Denise, very un-FBI like, IMO.
If this was going to be the arrest of Paul Flores, that would be very expected. I was telling my husband about it at dinner, and he said wow what if she was alive. I was stunned for a moment, and had to turn that possibility around in my head. I know it's a trillion to one odds, but I would love for that to be the case.

A “ break” in the case in one thing; “ something you didn’t expect” suggests something a little different. We will find out soon enough.

Maybe making the info public...a message to a suspect?

Maybe someone has confessed to supplying Paul Flores with a date-rape drug the night of Kristin's death.

A case with this much publicity is bound to elicit some false confessions from notoriety seekers. Maybe the development is not a break in the case but a spurious confession from one such notoriety seeker.

They’re hasn’t been much updates on the places of interest that were dug up recently or the remain from the previous dog (was it an animal? Human?). I also wonder if it could be a conviction spurred from pf ex girlfriend, it was said she had more info she shared with police after being interviews for the podcast

It would really be interesting if there is a connection to Paso Robles, instead of all the areas they have looked at in SLO & AG.

Can any clues be gleaned from this 2018 report, what was Kristan's good news, did it require travel?
KRISTIN SMART STORY – The California Register
By David Smallwood
Updated: July 25, 2018

Kristin Smart
“Good news, good news! I’ll call on Sunday” was the voice message left by Kristin Smart on the family’s answering machine Friday, May 24, 1996. Kristin did not call Sunday, and would never call again.''
''Logic supports the theory that Kristin Smart died on campus in the early morning hours of May 25, 1996. Her death may have been caused, or it may have been a tragic accident. There are different kinds of accidents, however. Some accidents are innocent and unforeseen. Some accidents happen because of carelessness. Some accidents happen due to simple, gross, or wanton negligence.

While conventional wisdom supports the theory that Kristin Smart died in the early morning hours of May 25, 1996, the exact details remain a mystery to this day. It’s logical to believe that something wrong happened that night, so wrong that one or more individuals felt it necessary to remove and discard Kristin’s body. The body may have been removed to hide damning evidence. Invaluable bodily evidence could have been discovered, such as: trauma to the body indicative of a fight, DNA left in or on the body, or traces of chemicals, such as a date-rape drug.''

I thought Paul Flores died in 2002? How can they charge a dead man

Wow, so mysterious on the part of the FBI! I can't wait to find out what it is.

Wouldn't it be something if she turned up alive?
