After all these years and the battles this family has faced. I think the most unexpected news for their family would be having justice served on all parties involved and finally being able to lay Kristin remains to rest.

Anxiously awaiting with everyone. I so hope the family gets both justice and their daughter back home….

Adding the below as sadly I think it will be remains.

Your Own Backyard
YOUR OWN BACKYARD

very beginning of Episode 6:

In 1996 Paul Flores attorney came to the Smart family attorney with an offer

allow Paul Flores to plead guilty to involuntary manslaughter with a 6 year sentence and an agreement not to pursue him in civil court and he would lead authorities to Kristin's body

before the Smart Family could even consider the compromise he withdrew the offer

That's a really good question. Many families of missing persons have been the target of scams by evil people and mentally ill people.
It's all over the media. If that were the case, the FBI & Sheriff would contact the family & put out a public statement. No way it's a hoax. I think the announcement was made public because they are watching someone. What about PF's Dad?

I know Ian Parkinson has been highly criticized, but I've supported him. We've had issues at work, and the Sheriff's office has always been responsive when we've needed them.

I've never thought it was a hoax. But I still think it's odd if LE/FBI didn't tell the family more than what we've read.

My first thought is there’s been some sort of connection made through Parabon/genealogy/DNA, perhaps on a UID, or even a suspect, which seems to be the case as of lately in other cases, when there is suddenly news in an old case, but that doesn’t seem to fit with the strange message??

What a strange message / BBM:
That was my thought too...but what an odd message. My head is spinning from my late night binge to catch up. Reading all the hurdles this family has faced. The civil suits between both families, the multiple search warrants and locations, the list goes on....

The most unexpected just might be a full confession but of course I waiver and think this might be a direct message to someone out there they have been closely watching (Paul Flores). I am hoping they finally found the body with direct evidence linking to him.

Beyond happy another case might be solved! We need that desperately on all these threads!

We could look up the arrest databases for PF's name in whichever so Cal county he is in periodically.....and maybe for the parents' name too in SLO
This^^ There has to be a paper trail by now, right?? I mean my goodness there has to be something that has already occurred, right?? MOO

Wouldn’t it be crazy if forensic genealogy found her? If she was alive and had kids who were curious about their heritage and it linked back to her. I know it is a long shot, but I just find the wording and the “heads up” so odd it makes me wonder.
Whatever the outcome, I do hope for some answers for the family. I’m sure the waiting is beyond a nightmare.

Yeah I’m thinking this has to do with forensic genealogy/DNA, etc., somehow.

But why advise the family they might want to get away?

ETA: I’ll be very very surprised if she’s still alive. I doubt this is the revelation, moo.

This is all reminding me of trying to decode all of LE’s strange words in Abby’s and Libby’s case...”there’s a twist”...”when you all finally know what we know”...etc.

He was using an alias or fake documents at one point but surely he would be booked under his real name....

ETA: it is obvious I think Paul is responsible for Kristin's death...I am wondering if he may have committed a whole slew of other crimes under his alias but people only knew him by the fake name (hope that makes since) just jumped into my head after I posted

Perhaps she passed somehow and while she isn’t available her children are and would like to connect. Could explain the need to give some time to tie up loose ends before embarking on this.

I do think it is likely not the case, I think PF is most likely the offender, but one can hope for something positive to come from this. ;)

I’m hopeful that if it was a hoax, the FBI would have responded and made a correction before now.

Or if her remains were found in an area they never expected. Which lead to "others" who were never on LE's radar. They have gotten the DNA results back, made a positive ID, it is indeed Kristin. Now they make an announcement and watch ... All just MOO.

I wonder if this has anything to do with this, from 2016:

Police dig up university site hunting for missing college student Kristin Smart | Daily Mail Online

BBM:

“Police and FBI agents have started excavated a site on the edge of California Polytechnic State University in the hope of finding the remains of a student who vanished more than 20 years ago.”

Snip

“Obviously, we want to be as optimistic as possible and we hope that this leads us to either Kristin or evidence of Kirstin.'

The site, in hilly terrain next to a campus parking lot, was one of several identified in January by dogs specially trained in detecting the scent of old human remains.”

Snip

“The location was disclosed because of its high visibility but the other sites are being kept secret because 'we do not want to tip our hat to the possible suspect or suspects out there,' Parkinson said.

He added: 'We have developed this lead over the past couple of years and have been working on it. This lead was determined, or developed, after a comprehensive review of the entire case.'”

Snip

“Around 25 FBI agents and more than two dozen sheriff's deputies were expected to take part in the excavation, using more sophisticated technology than was available 20 years ago.”

The only thing that makes sense to me about them telling the family they might want to both get away and have a spokesperson, is because whatever news they have is going to create a media circus. They appear to be genuinely concerned with the family and being a support to them, so it stands to reason they might want to shield them from the media when the news finally breaks. (this is entirely speculation of course).
