Officers and deputies are trying to communicate with a man barricaded inside a mobile home after he points a gun to his baby’s head following a pursuit in Lancaster.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said on December 21, 2022 a around 2:30 a.m., deputies were called to Lancaster for CHP about a barricade situation.

The department said CHP was following a suspect the night before after he failed to stop.
During the pursuit, the department said the suspect fired a gun at the officers while driving.

No one was hurt.

The department said at the end of the pursuit, the suspect, identified as 44-year-old Fernando, pointed a gun at his 17-month old baby boy’s head while entering a mobile home at the Lido Estates Mobile Home Community.

Man barricades in Lancaster mobile home park with infant after shooting at officers during high-speed pursuit

The California Highway Patrol said a man got in a high-speed pursuit with officers, shot at them, and barricaded in a Lancaster mobile home with an infant.

Officers from the California Highway Patrol at around 11:45 p.m. Tuesday began pursuing a man who was driving at speeds over 130 mph through surface streets in Palmdale before driving onto the northbound 14 Highway Freeway, CHP Officer Patrick Kimball said.

During the pursuit, the man called the sheriff's department and threatened to shoot at officers if they didn't break away from the chase, investigators said.

The suspect eventually did fire at officers, but nobody was injured, according to the CHP.

Let’s hope the baby gets out of this alive, at least!

That poor child's mom must be going out of her mind! Prayers and white light, sent her way!

Since barricading himself inside the house, the only message he has communicated was a note posted in the window asking for diapers for his son.

The diapers have not yet been provided, but authorities are attempting to deliver a cellphone to the residence via robot to open up lines of communication.

LANCASTER, Calif. (KABC) -- A dangerous barricade situation involving an infant held at gunpoint by his father ended after nearly 20 hours with the child safe and the suspect down, officials said.

I'm not sure what "suspect down" means. Shot by LE or killed himself? Or was he simply injured? I can't imagine they spent all day talking with the suspect only to shoot him. Maybe he threatened the child again.

I'm just so thankful this wee one is safe tonight.

The LA Times is saying that Deputy Miesha McClendon (LA County Sheriff's Dept) reported "at least one deputy opened fire and hit the suspect, whose condition was not immediately available". Baby was uninjured when rescued.

Once that man pointed a loaded gun at his baby's head, my sympathy towards him was gone. If that officer felt it necessary to take that man down, so be it. I hope the officer is given legal and moral support because he did the right thing, imo.

I couldn't agree more. I was so worried about the baby in the hands of that monster! Who holds a gun to a baby's head?!?!

SEB deputy personnel arrived at the scene and assumed command of the tactical incident. The suspect placed a gun to the child’s head while deputy personnel tried to communicate with him, at which time a deputy-involved shooting happened, according to the department.

Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department said the shooting happened at around 9:05 p.m.

The suspect was treated by medical personnel on scene and pronounced dead.

A gun was recovered at the scene.
ETA: The child was not hurt.
