Footage from body cameras worn by an LAPD officer and a sergeant involved in Sunday’s deadly shooting in downtown’s skid row does not show whether the man reached for an officer's gun, law enforcement sources said.

But three sources who reviewed the footage from the chest-mounted cameras said the video was still consistent with accounts that the man did grab an officer's holstered pistol.

One source said an officer is heard on the video shouting "He's got my gun" multiple times. The footage then shows the officers pulling away from the man as though his actions posed a threat, the sources said.

The sources requested anonymity because they were not allowed to publicly discuss the ongoing investigation into the shooting.​

After making contact, however, the suspect began fighting and physically resisting the officers attempts to take him into custody. The officers attempted to use a TASER to subdue him but the suspect continued to fight and resist the officers and fell to the ground. While on the ground, the suspect and officers struggled over one of the officer's handguns and then an officer-involved shooting occurred.

However, no officer goes to work with the intent of using force, much less deadly force. As tragic as these situations are, law enforcement officers absolutely have the right to defend their life or the life of another.”

In response to growing tensions in Los Angeles over the police killing of a homeless man on Sunday, the president of the local officers’ labor union urged the public to “reserve their judgment” until an investigation was complete.
