A terrible and weird case.
A man walking by the beach in the University of California, Santa Barbara campus noticed three sleeping bags. Only one was moving despite the heavy midday sun. When he looked closer he noticed that the man that was moving had his face covered in blood. He called for help and when the police arrived they found that Larry Hess, 23 and Thomas Dolan, 17 had been stabbed many times and smashed with some blunt objects. The survivor, Thomas Hayes, had several surgeries to repair internal damage. When he was questioned he said that he woke up and was surrounded by chanting figures with hoods and flowing robes.
The case remains unsolved and it was not the first "beach murder" in the zone at that time. One Manson family member claimed that it was the work of a cult called "Maxwell´s Silver Hammer" (as the Beatles tune). Here I found a couple of press articles:
