Atchison, a retired truck driver, was diagnosed with dementia three years ago and stays close to his wife, Cecilia Atchison, 70.

He disappeared while she was in a bathroom for about 15 minutes, Cecilia Atchison told The Press Democrat on Tuesday. She called police after searching her neighborhood Monday afternoon.

“I drove for an hour and I couldn’t find him,” she said.

Stormy conditions spurred authorities to launch an extensive search that has been ongoing since Monday when Cecilia Atchison reported her husband missing.

Surveillance footage from that afternoon showed Lawrence Atchison in the area of Summerfield Road and Carissa Avenue, which is less than half a mile from his home.

Authorities established a command post a mile to the south at Bennett Valley Center Shopping Plaza and searched the surrounding area, including Trione-Annadel State Park and Bennett Valley Golf Course.

Cecilia Atchison said her husband can walk long distances and would seek shelter in rainy conditions. He’s social and would ask for help, but she worried he could approach the wrong people.

Police asked that residents check their properties, including outhouses, and surveillance equipment for any sign of Lawrence Atchison.

He is 6 feet tall and 200 pounds. He was last seen wearing a black Columbia jacket with no hood, dark blue jeans and black slip-on shoes.

Cecilia Atchison praised law enforcement for their response and said they’ve been contacting her on an hourly basis since her husband disappeared Monday.

“I haven’t slept the whole night,” she said.

I am assuming those photos of him are from the day he left the house. MOO, but just noting that by his body posture he didn’t seem distressed at that point. Doesn’t appear to be running or hurrying away. Looks relaxed, hands in pockets.

Dementia is such a terrible illness. So young to lose his cognition. He’s younger than me! Worrisome and sad.

I am close to this case. I know the family. He does not appear to be distressed here. It is a real mystery at this point. He is a former truck driver, and carries a list of contacts with him at all times. He did not have any cash with him, and was walking a route that he walks often. However, he may not be able to remember where he has been due to his condition. He really likes being around people. Even though his condition has affected him, he is still able to tell jokes, and loves to make people laugh. His family really needs help on this one. I have been with Websleuths for many years, and this one hits too close to home. We all thought he would be found quickly.

I wish I had more information to add.

Larry was found deceased :( . May he rest in peace.

A woman walking on a rural trail in the 4500 block of Fawn Hollow Lane, southeast of Santa Rosa's Bennett Valley neighborhood, noticed a body lying on the ground and believed the person was dead, according to a release from the Santa Rosa Police Department.

The woman contacted the Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office and deputies who responded to the location noticed the clothing on the body matched those of Atchison and confirmed he was deceased.

Santa Rosa detectives do not believe foul play was involved, but a cause of death has not yet been released.
