Lynda Santamaria first feared it was a false alarm. Now she describes it as a miracle.
After months of waiting, hoping and searching for her missing daughter, Leah Rose Altmann, Santamaria got the call she had long hoped for, but feared might never come.
Leah had been found alive.
Altmann, a Royal Palm Beach native who disappeared in late August from her apartment in Los Angeles, was located last month after an extensive search by police, volunteers and a social-media awareness campaign that drew national attention.
Words cannot express the gratitude for the literally hundreds and thousands of total strangers who embraced my daughter and never gave up, Santamaria said Tuesday in her first comments since Altmann was found. We knew it would only take one (to help find her).
Citing safety concerns and her daughters request for privacy, the family is not commenting on where Altmann, 27, was found, what happened to her during the months she was missing or where she is now.
The familys focus now is helping Leah recover, Santamaria said.
Right now, we are concentrating on helping her get better physically and emotionally, and slowly learning her story through her voice, she said.
