CA - Liz Hamel, 18, UC Santa Barbara Student falls to her death from dorm breezeway 20 minutes after leaving restaurant with unknown male, 14 Feb 2025

I’m a bit confused about the timeline if she left the bar at 10:06 pm and was found at 10:26pm by a student thats only 20 min.
And who knows how long she has been lying there before being found.

How can she go from leaving the restaurant to be found dead in only 20 min.

It’s almost like she just went up there and immediately fell down without much time for anything else in the meantime. Like talking or having a drink etc .
It’s one of the shortest timelines I have ever seen.
Did any of the MSM stories say he actually saw her fall and was afraid to call 911? I based my earlier comments on what was said in post #4. Now I'm trying to find where that is stated?

It appears the sfgate article updated the article and removed the part where the father of the victim told the news publication what the mystery man purportedly said.

You can see the prior version thru the wayback machine: (hope this is ok to do?)

Thought I was going crazy, I went back through all the stories and could not find it. Thanks!

I live in the area and walk my dogs past this dorm all the time. It is solidly built and the breezeway wall is high. I don’t see a structural issue or dangerous area. Something else happened.
I think the male was likely under the influence of something when it happened and that’s why he didn’t call 911. Plenty of alcohol and drug use at this university, sadly.
Seems like every year a student climbs over the chain link fence on the nearby cliff and falls to their death. I haven’t heard of anyone falling at this dorm previously, however. It’s very odd.

I still find the timeline to be very tight. It doesn’t leave much room for anything except leave go up fall . It would be strange if he didn’t see her fall if they were together. Unless I dont know he left to go somewhere get drinks/ toilet etc and she fell during that time he might have not realized she fell and perhaps thought she just left?

A big question for me is "what was he doing there" at that dorm, if he wasn't a student? Or was he? No one has reported that he was a student.

This ^ bbm.
How do authorities know for a fact that she actually feel from the breezeway. From what I understand, there are no cameras in the area. Or am I wrong?

I guess that given how rapidly they found him after her parents hired a lawyer and a PI, it is reasonable to assume that he was a local. JMO. So the question is, given that they probably knew him, whom were they protecting? Zero empathy to the poor victim and her parents, IMHO.

He may have been a local, but not a student, so what was he doing on the third floor of the residence hall? Why do you think that LE knew him? Santa Barbara has a huge transient population of young people and others. He may be a local, but the issue is that LE appears not to have spent much time looking for the unidentified male who was photographed by Liz's friends when they were together at the restaurant. Once the father and his lawyer got the word out with the photo, then apparently it didn't take very long for people to identify him. I don't think LE are protecting him, I think they are still investigating if he committed a crime or not, and they are working with the DA to determine this, at least according to the father.

JMO.

JMO.

Perhaps. There is very little information about the case in the news now.

Some of this info I haven’t seen elsewhere yet:

Feb 14: Father said she’s seen in photos (I presume at the restaurant) at 10:06 looking happy.

At 10:27, the 9-1-1 call is made.

She is taken to the hospital and underwent surgery immediately.

The hospital was not able to identify her that evening.

The next morning, her friends filed a missing person’s report.

They were directed to the hospital to identify her.

Her parents were notified that afternoon.

She was declared brain dead on Feb 20, and died on Feb 21.

The father said tge walk from the Lao Wang restaurant to the San Rafael dorms takes between five and ten minutes.

He didn't look like a UCSB student, JMO. He looks like someone who works in the trades (Carhartt Utility Jeans) and frequents the area near student housing.

Whatever happened, it was very quick. They only serve beer at the noodle bar, how long were they there? Was he buying her drinks?

from the sfgate you linked:
“She, apparently accidentally, left her phone and identification in the restaurant; both were later picked up by friends.”

Odd to have left her phone and ID behind, when for the majority of young people, they are never without their phones. jmo.

Have they done an autopsy/toxicology? Of course, this may turnout to be something entirely different, but reading about this case brought to my memory a case of a college student in CO who jumped from a balcony and died. He had eaten a marijuana edible in cookie form. He was supposed to eat only 1/6 of the cookie, but he ate the whole thing, and had a psychotic reaction. (Link)
I do wonder about that as well. How could she walk away without her phone and ID? She might have been drinking I suppose. But it still seems unusual. IMO

Just looks like a student to me

Jmo
He looks like a student to me too. Carhartt clothing is a popular thing among young guys in So Cal.

I don't think she'd have left with him if he wasn't a student. If he was a random worker I don't think she would have felt comfortable going with him.

I thought a bit about leaving her ID and phone behind and I thought that maybe she has done this on purpose.
Her parents had app on the phone to check where she was .

Maybe for some reason she didn’t want to be seen as out late and left it so her friends took it to the dorm as “ she is there now “. Not to worry parents perhaps .

ID could have been together with phone, many people carry cards and IDs in phone cases to not carry purse on them . Just a thought.

It was published online where he is studying. Not in MSM though. I find it odd that they went to that location. And how come she didn't notice that she left her belongings behind?
