[h=1]Body discovered in Central Fresno canal likely Lucy Xiong, police say[/h]
Coroners will have to give final confirmation, but they have a "high degree of certainty." https://t.co/yvSOLScYds

The body was recovered in a canal near Van Ness Avenue and Elizabeth Street after witnesses reported it, and police say they have a "high degree of certainty" that the body is Xiong given the clothing she was wearing.

Very sorry to hear....quite a tragedy.

Not at all the outcome I was hoping for. How horrible that the last thing the mother will remember of her daughter is them in an argument.
I don't think that will be the case forever. Lucy was a beautiful girl, and I'm sure they have a lifetime of happy memories. People argue all the time, with no tragic ending. Lucy stormed out, it is not her mothers fault. Neither could have anticipated this tragic ending. Poor Lucy. :(

Do we know any more about the credit card usage and whether they think this is a homicide or a tragic fall?

I'm really interested in how these two men play into this whole scenario. They have some 'plainin' to do as why they were using the credit cards of a woman who is deceased.

I doubt they will ever admit to wrong doing! They're just going to say they found her purse.. maybe they did..who knows..

Lucy Xiang has been missing since July 28.

Police believe it was her body that was spotted by a passerby in a central Fresno canal.

She was found at Van Ness and Elizabeth avenues in central Fresno on Saturday, Aug. 6.

The canal where the body was found is about 1.5 miles from where Xiong was last seen, in the area of Olive Avenue and First Street.

“There is a high degree of certainty this is Lucy Xiong,” Dyer told reporters. The coroner, who is in charge of identifications, did a preliminary examination at the scene, but police don’t expect to know more before Sunday, he said.

Police previously searched the area where the body was found Saturday and removed a significant amount of debris, and the body was not there then, Dyer said. “What we don’t know is where she was from when she fell in to today,” he said. “The body was possibly lodged at a bridge.”

Irrigation district officials told police that bodies may become lodged in pipes under bridges, Dyer said. “The lowering and raising of the water possibly caused her to become dislodged,” he said.

A body found Saturday in a central Fresno canal has been positively identified as Lucy Xiong, the 20-year-old who disappeared more than a week ago.

There were no injuries found on Lucy Xiong's body that would have caused her death, so at this point and time the cause of death is determined to be drowning," Fresno Police Chief Jerry Dyer said.

While the case remains under investigation, Dyer believes Xiong accidentally fell into the Fresno canal back on July 28th somewhere near First and McKinley and never recovered.

"There's also no evidence to suggest Lucy Xiong's death involved foul play," Dyer said.

Thank you for this - the sides are so shallow - it seems a person would be able to climb out quite easily - there are even ladders. For some reason I was envisioning the kind of canals we have around here which have steep, straight sides with a 5 foot or more drop off in some places. I followed it quite a ways in both directions and there is a fair amount of scrub, trees and fencing (not really any gravel) that would make it difficult to walk along for very long, though NE of your marker there are some stretches with walking paths alongside with entry from the street - not places I would envision a gang of purse-snatching thieves to be hanging around waiting for a drunk girl to walk by though. Then I got to First and McKinley and wow that looks so unsafe. I think it is so possible she was randomly attacked and thrown in and the reason she couldn't get up on the bank or grab an underpass column was because she was out cold.

I cant edit but to add. I read somewhere (I forget which article) that they think she got hung up in one of the viaducts under a roadway and then was dislodged when they lowered the water level to search for her. she wasn't always in the area she was found.

Would she have been sucked in there while still alive? :( (Terrible thought!) How fast does the water flow/how strong is the current?

its possible... I don't live there anymore but it is crop season so there is usually quite a bit of water flowing through there pretty strong. but this was a mile or so away she was probably deceased. I actually prefer that than her being sucked into a viaduct :(

[h=1]Police: Missing woman found dead in creek not victim of foul play despite credit cards being stolen[/h]
Lucy Xiong's disappearance had an entire city praying for her safe return until Monday when Fresno police confirmed the body recovered from this canal belonged to her.

Detectives say it appears she accidentally slipped and drowned, but the family has its doubts.

"I believe she would never kill herself, even if she is dead, her spirit will come back to us," Lucy's mom Chao Yang said through a translator.

Healing hasn't come easy for this family, who say finding Lucy offers little closure.

"I can't believe that she float in the water, I can't believe it, maybe someone struck her," Kor said.
"There were no injuries found on Lucy Xiong's body that would have caused her death, so at this point and time the cause of death is determined to be drowning," Fresno Police Chief Jerry Dyer said.

While the case remains under investigation, Dyer believes Xiong accidentally fell into the Fresno canal back on July 28 somewhere near First and McKinley and never recovered.

"There's also no evidence to suggest Lucy Xiong's death involved foul play," Dyer said.

But that's not what her father believes.
"I believe someone abducted her and did something bad to her because she would never do this to herself," Lucy's father Kor Xiong said. "We're not going to stop because we believe something else happened to her."

Investigators have interviewed one of the suspects who allegedly stole Xiong's identity the night she went missing. That suspect is not believed to be involved in Xiong's death but is expected to be arrested later this week on fraud charges after finding Xiong's purse near the canal and taking her credit cards.

"She's very cooperative, she understands that she's going to be arrested," Dyer said. "It's just the timing of that arrest, tie up some loose ends prior to the arrest."

My heart goes out to the family. This is really tragic and I don't blame them for questioning what happened. That said, I wonder if there may be some miscommunication going on with the translators and police because the parents are saying she would never kill herself and police are saying this is an accident, not suicide. I can't really imagine how she would slip and fall but drop her purse on the ground before falling in. I COULD see her struggling with someone who grabbed her purse and Lucy falling backwards while the person yanked her purse away. That could happen quickly with no major defensive wounds. JMO.

Interesting that they are going to arrest a women for fraud in connection with stealing Lucy's credit cards. I wonder if this is the same woman who called 911 to report a drowning?

Not only that but her boyfriend made it sound like he could hear a scuffle after she said Oh **** and before she screamed. That just sounds like her purse was grabbed, she was pushed and screamed as she fell in. I still don't see how anyone could drown in this canal without being knocked out first. Even with a strong current, you should be able to stay afloat/doggy paddle to the side eventually. If there are ducts or currents strong enough to suck a person under, the city needs to block off all access to prevent accidents - aren't kids drawn to this to play otherwise?

maybe she fell in accidentally and simply did not know how to swim.

We have canals like these here in AZ too and sadly, people do drown every year. A dog was just rescued in the last week or so. The walls are indeed slick, the water does move fast.

Was it said early on that her mother was chasing after her (paraphrasing) when she left originally, after the argument?

My heart breaks for her parents.

idk why tehya rent blocked off but the California aqueduct isn't either. I can say with 100% positivity having actually walked by these canals that almost anyone could drown in them.

This is the first I heard anything about a female using Lucy's credit cards..I thought I read 2 makes were seen using the cards.. maybe they were all together. During the phone call to the boyfriend I guess she could've tripped and in that moment could've screamed oh snap cuz she knew she was going to fall and Phone went dead once it hit the water
