Lifeguards looking for missing San Vicente Reservoir kayaker

San Diego Lifeguards and Sheriff's deputies are searching for a missing kayaker at San Vicente Reservoir Saturday.

San Diego County Sheriff's Department said they were helping San Diego Lifeguards search for a 50-year-old man who was missing in the area.

An overturned kayak had been located nearby as well, SDSO said.

"Deputies confirmed at about 12:30 p.m. a body was found in the reservoir during their search for the kayaker, but did not say whether it was the same missing man."

San Diego Fire-Rescue Marine Safety Lt. Rich Stropky said it was an Asian or Hispanic man in his 50’s.

The body was found during a search for a missing 50-year-old man who was reportedly kayaking in the area shortly after 11:30 a.m.

An overturned kayak was found nearby as well, San Diego County Sheriff's Department said, but deputies did not say whether it was the same missing man.

The body was found about 15 feet from where the capsized kayak was found.

It wasn't clear whether the person was wearing a personal flotation device. Officials at the scene said high winds Saturday were creating rough conditions at the reservoir.

Authorities identify kayaker found dead in San Vicente Reservoir
Authorities Monday identified a 50-year-old kayaker who died at the San Vicente Reservoir in Lakeside.

Nicolas Khaiaphone of San Diego was found dead after his kayak overturned in the reservoir on Saturday morning. A boater noticed the overturned kayak in the reservoir around 10 a.m. and notified staff.

San Diego lifeguards found Khaiaphone in the water and pronounced him dead at the scene at 12:04 p.m.

Other boaters on the water say they saw the man get in the kayak to start fishing near 7:30 a.m. The wind picked up and the water became choppy shortly after.

A ruling on Khaiaphone's cause of death was pending, the San Diego Medical Examiner's Office reported.
