Manhunt is on for inmate who escaped from California prison

California authorities were on a manhunt Thursday for an inmate who walked away from San Quentin State Prison and is believed to have carjacked a vehicle overnight.

Shalom Mendoza, 21, was last seen at the prison before 6 p.m. Wednesday and reported missing after 9:30 p.m. Wednesday. He fled from an unfenced minimum-security dormitory outside the prison walls, spokesman Sgt. Robert Gardea said.

Mendoza is believed to have carjacked a victim in a Home Depot parking lot less than a mile from the prison after 9 p.m., fleeing in a silver Toyota RAV4 with California license plate number 6STZ502, San Rafael police said.

They said a man with a similar physical description to Mendoza, last seen wearing a white T-shirt and khaki or light-yellow pants, motioned to the victim as if he had a weapon or gun under his shirt. He then threatened to kill her and demanded her car keys, but she was not injured.

A San Quentin Prison inmate walked away from a work-crew assignment and may have carjacked a woman at a nearby Home Depot to escape, according to the San Rafael Police Department. I've done some digging into his background, and if history is any indication, it's possible he's no longer in the stolen SUV.

I used to live in Novato (back in the 50s/early 60s) which is near San Quentin! I didn't know they had a non-secure area there??!!

Oh, cool. I often went to San Rafael on business (early 2000’s) and kind of passed San Quentin when I came in from Frisco. :)

Also in San Rafael is where we got our polio shots - in the sugar cube! My father used to do artificial insemination of cows (Sonoma , Napa & Marin counties) & took care of the cows in San Quentin. I went with him one time (San Quentin) but they made me stay by the guard station. LOL!

Mendoza is not the only inmate currently missing from a state prison: Officials are also searching for Justin Franks, 22, who “walked away” from Folsom State Prison on Saturday.

Franks was last seen around 7 p.m. Saturday. Officials say Franks “walked away” from the prison before an inmate count at 9 p.m., when he was discovered missing by officers.

Franks was serving a three-year, four-month sentence for first-degree burglary, according to the department. He is white with brown eyes, short black hair and a light complexion, stands 5 feet 10 inches tall and weighs 143 pounds.

California authorities on a nearly four-day manhunt for an inmate who walked away from San Quentin State Prison captured him Saturday.

Officials from the state Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation said they took 21-year-old Shalom Mendoza into custody at a fast food restaurant without incident. A resident alerted authorities after seeing Mendoza at the restaurant in Paso Robles, more than 200 miles southeast of the prison.
