Coroner’s investigators are working to identify apparent human remains found near the Golden Gate Bridge.

The bones, which appear to be human, were discovered by hikers in the Headlands east of Fort Baker on Friday, according to a press release issued Tuesday by the Marin County Sheriff’s Office coroner division.

The National Park Service contacted the coroner's division after the discovery was made.

The "skeletonized" remains, which appear to be of human origin, were found in an open space area commonly inhabited by transients, according to officials. Foul play is not suspected.
"Evidence at the scene was suggestive of this being a previously occupied transient encampment," officials said in a statement.
The remains will undergo further examination and evaluation in an effort to positively identify the subject.

Neither the National Park Service nor the sheriff's office's Coroner's Division personnel saw any overt evidence of a criminal act or foul play where the bones were found, the sheriff's office said.

The bones were collected for additional examination by the Coroner Division's chief forensic pathologist, a forensic odontologist and a forensic anthropologist. They will then be submitted to the California Bureau of Forensic Services DNA laboratory for positive identification, the sheriff's office said.

Although they said there was evidence of a homeless encampment, I wonder if this is in a place where someone who jumped from the Golden Gate Bridge could have washed up? When I saw "near the Golden Gate Bridge" I immediate remembered Cristian Soto Sanchez. He was said to have jumped off the bridge but he is still listed as missing: https://www.websleuths.com/forums/s...an-Soto-Sanchez-23-San-Francisco-24-Sept-2016

The area described appears to be well away from the water and steeply uphill: https://goo.gl/maps/rDtX9JdkUmF2

I'm guessing maybe near that hiking trail marked "Drown Road Trail."

I wonder if its still possible to be a jumper that landed on the terrain and was missed for some reason.

Well, strange things certainly happen, but it doesn't look possible based on the terrain.

That's a terribly sad story about the young man who texted the photo. :(

There's no way someone could jump from the Golden Gate bridge without being seen or on video. I live nearby and it is watched 24/7 by various organizations to stop people who are there to jump. Cops in little carts go up and down during the day, and I think it's closed to walking at night.

Seeing the terrain (open space) I think that the remains are more recent. A body becoming a skeleton would take not that long above ground. We don't know yet what the estimated year of death is but I find it not very plausible that a body could lay there for many years and is not found in an earlier stage. Especially in this open space, looking like you could walk your dog. Is there a local who could give some insight on this. I agree with Carbuff that it is unlikely that it's a jumper washed up at that spot.

A set of skeletal remains found in the Marin Headlands in March has been identified as a homeless man who was living in the Sausalito area, the coroner’s office said Wednesday.

Brian Edwin Deen was 62 years old, said Chief Deputy Coroner Roger Fielding. The cause of death is unlikely to be determined because of the remains’ “prolonged exposure to the elements,” Fielding said.
