Mississippi woman missing in Sequoia National Park, vehicle found

Park rangers are searching for a Mississippi woman last seen in Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Park on Thursday.

Rangers found Mary Joanna Gomez's car unoccupied in the Little Baldy region of Sequoia early Sunday morning. They left a note on her windshield in case she returned.

Rescue teams are now combing the area in search of the 56-year-old but have not yet found her, officials said.

Missing Mississippi woman found after spelling out S-O-S with rocks, rangers say
National Park Service officials say Mary Joanna Gomez was found after a California Air National Guard aircraft spotted rocks that spelled out S-O-S. Rangers said despite being cold, hungry and thirsty, Gomez was in good health.

Officials say Gomez was 3.5 miles away from her car, which had been discovered Sunday around midnight.

I am so relieved! Sounds like she is very resourceful. I’m going to sleep much better tonight knowing she’s not out in the elements.

I think we all will!

And she really helped rescue herself by keeping her head and spelling out a large S-O-S so that she could be spotted by air! Kudos, Mary!
