OAKLAND – The deadly inferno inside a warehouse art collective that killed 36 people on Dec. 2 was caused by overloaded electrical lines at the rear of the structure where investigators had focused attention, according to sources familiar with the matter.
...
After ruling out arson, electrical engineers have looked hard at the art collective’s power sources – an ad hoc network of extension cords stretched through a maze of small dwelling units and studios, all fed from one line coming through a hole punched in the wall to a neighboring business, a person familiar with the wiring has said.
...
All of the electricity in the Ghost Ship came through a single meter that was shared with neighboring stereo and mobile phone shops, according to City Councilman Noel Gallo.

No surprise there. The article is actually an updated one from last week. Apparently not a lot has changed. For now and until I hear differently, I'm sticking to my theory that the sound system that night overloaded and cords caught fire. BTW I'm in no way blaming the performers - there's an assumption that when people play a venue the power will be adequate.

I blame Derick Ion. I hope we learn more from Tuesday's news conference.

This article describes some of the buildings history. I think it is interesting. The hole in the in the second story floor is addressed briefly.

from the same article: http://www.sfchronicle.com/bayarea/article/What-life-was-like-for-Ghost-Ship-tenants-10788491.php

The lot is 4,032 square feet, and, in 2015, the parcel and building had an assessed value of $43,249. It is owned by a family trust controlled by Chor Ng, who also owns adjacent property at 3071-3073 International Blvd. Her daughter and son, Eva and Kai, manage the properties.

Thank you to all that have posted links to the various newspaper articles. The more I have read, the angrier I have become. Those 36 souls that died in this fire DID suffer immensely, not only psychologically facing their own deaths, but physiologically horrific deaths. Medically speaking.

I really hope they hold DIA accountable and charge him soon. He was negligent at minimum.

What is the new Oregon law regarding Section 8 and source of income protection?

Oregon law has long prohibited discrimination in rental or for-sale housing (including advertising the sale or rental of housing) on the basis of protected class status, including race, religion, national origin, sex, marital or familial status, and source of income. Prior to passage of HB 2639 in 2013, the “source of income” category explicitly excluded federal rent assistance, which primarily refers to the Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher program, which meant that Oregon landlords could refuse to rent to applicants, or even to consider them, just because they had a Section 8 voucher. HB 2639, passed under the leadership of House of Representatives Speaker Tina Kotek, removes that exception and explicitly states that federal or any other housing assistance is included in the source of income protection.

An investigation by The Oregonian last year found that Section 8 recipients had limited opportunities to live in neighborhoods with low poverty. Over the span of a decade, voucher-use surged in impoverished neighborhoods east of 82nd Avenue, particularly impacting communities of color.

"I do think it will make a difference," House Speaker Tina Kotek, D-Portland, said Monday. "It creates that door of opportunity" for voucher-holders to apply for housing close to work, kids' schools and in thriving neighborhoods.

I think it is so strange that we have not heard anything about everyone lawyering up, or police taking them in for questioning .

I suppose all of that could have happened and we dont know but usually reporters find out about that kind of thing.

Its also IMO somewhat odd that we don't know if they are still at the Marriot, I would kinda think once they were outed they would relocate, or hotel folks would ask them to leave in that they really do not want global media camping out in their lobby

They better not have lost them. I get they cant keep them somewhere at this point (evidently) but follow them whereever they go even if it is a new city - its not like they have any reason to stay there any longer.

It opened in 2006, I applied. My name came up in 2011. At that time I didn't need it (now I do but too late) it comes up eventually but not fast enough to be a real choice.

For the record, Section 8 waiting lists in the San Francisco Bay Area are only opened up about once every ten years or more. Tens of thousands of people apply, and unless the applicant is very young, they will never live long enough to actually get to the top of the waiting list.

Section 8 is not a housing option in the Bay Area.

OT, but you could come to Oregon. You don't even need Section 8 here. There is plenty of subsidized public housing available. I was on the the wait list for three days before I got mine. If I had stayed in California I would have been homeless for at least one year, before I could have gotten anything.

From link

the arrangement was something condoned by the property owner who owned several of the adjacent buildings as well, and she would collect proportional sums from the different tenants. A hole punched through the back wall of the building apparently brought electricity through, coming from a shared meter with "neighboring stereo and mobile phone shops."

that aint good

Last Wednesday, an estimated 200 people filled the Omni Commons, a community event space in Oakland’s Temescal neighborhood, to coordinate efforts and offer help making repairs and renovations to live/work warehouses to make them safer, said David Keenan, a founding member of the Omni and one of the organizers of the event, which is now calling itself the DIY Safety Group.

The group was quickly split into several working groups, including people who have construction skills, experience with code enforcement, finance and fundraising, communications and legal assistance, Keenan said. Already, he and others with experience in building and fire codes have gone out to do “pre-inspections” of buildings to make sure fire hazards are reduced, interior bedrooms or other structures are built safely, exit signs and fire extinguishers are in place, and exits are clear.
