Ghost Ship criminal case meets its end with restitution order

July 23, 2021
OAKLAND — After four years, the criminal case resulting from the 2016 Ghost Ship warehouse fire that killed 36 people has reached its end with a $5.8 million restitution order that those involved doubt will ever be paid.

At a Friday morning court hearing, master tenant Derick Almena was ordered to pay $209,000 in restitution, which comes out to about $5,800 for each of the 36 fire victims. The remaining $5.6 million was split between attorney fees and other court costs, according to an Alameda County District Attorney spokeswoman.

The money is intended to cover funeral costs and the cost of victims’ lost property, the spokeswoman said.

I'm sure Derick will get right on to earning money to pay the victims' families (sarcasm). Ugh, I really hate this man.

I doubt the smaller amount will be paid either so why lower it?
My daughter lost friends in this fire, $5800 is a slap in the face. jmo
Without a doubt it is a slap in the face. I can't say what I'd like to say in addition to what so many of us have already said and thought.

We here have such an ache about this horrible event, and it won't be shaken off any time soon.
Maybe one day Almena will get what's coming to him, but it likely won't be on this planet earth.
He's lucky to be alive... The selfish, cold-hearted, greedy you-know-what.

Sept. 2, 2021:
Ghost Ship warehouse landlord files bankruptcy to settle lawsuit
Nearly five years after a fire tore through the Ghost Ship warehouse and killed three dozen people, the final chapter of legal proceedings related to the tragedy is nearing its end.

The Ng family, owners of the Fruitvale District building, filed Chapter 11 bankruptcy on April 30 and wrote in their court petition that they plan to liquidate their assets in order to pay an estimated $11.8 million to survivors and families of the 36 people who died in the Dec. 2, 2016 inferno.

Victim families and survivors sued Chor Nar Siu Ng and her children Eva Ng and Kai Ng along with the city of Oakland, PG&E, party promoters and master tenant Derick Almena, alleging the landlord was partly responsible for the conditions that caused the fire.
...
The proposed settlement would end the civil lawsuit. Last year, the city of Oakland settled the case, agreeing to pay $23.5 million to victim families and $9.2 million to Samuel Maxwell.

Sept. 16, 2022

OAKLAND — A judge on Friday delayed a decision over whether former Ghost Ship warehouse master tenant Derick Almena would have his probation revoked for allegedly possessing weapons in his Ukiah home.

Alameda County Superior Court Judge C. Don Clay said he wanted to hold an evidentiary hearing before making a decision on the case, which could land Almena, 52, back in jail. Clay asked prosecutors and Almena’s attorney, Tony Serra, to appear on Oct. 14 to set a date for that hearing.
