I think restitution was finalized back in 2021 when Almena was ordered to pay 209k in restitution. Maybe the recent hearings were about claims that he’s destitute or something? And what the heck was that May 23 “felony” hearing?

Not a peep in msm that I could find and no future hearings scheduled for Almena. I guess he’s old news.

From 2021:
At a Friday morning court hearing, master tenant Derick Almena was ordered to pay $209,000 in restitution, which comes out to about $5,800 for each of the 36 fire victims. The remaining $5.6 million was split between attorney fees and other court costs, according to an Alameda County District Attorney spokeswoman.

Thanks a bunch for this info - if it really doesn't tell us anything! :D

I shall put this case in my finished pile...

And thank you for ALL the updates you have given me!

The Ghost Ship warehouse in Oakland, where 36 people died in a tragic fire in 2016, was demolished in May and could become the site of a housing complex under new developers.

The Unity Council, an Oakland-based nonprofit that was behind the creation of the nearby Fruitvale Village, a mixed-use development with retail spaces, offices and apartments, bought the warehouse property on May 12 for $2.56 million.

The nonprofit’s leaders are aiming to build housing at the site of the tragedy, but plans are not yet finalized. The earliest construction could begin is sometime in 2025.

Wonderful!

So we may see at least 2 good things from this horrific disaster -- appropriately developed housing and @gitana1 !

(iirc, Gitana lost an extended family member in this tragic event and then joined us here.)

Thanks for bringing the reality of the painfully individual nature of the Ghost Ship crime to our attention, and for sharing your knowledge of the law & the California court system.

Hope you are safe from the hurricane & earthquake(s) !

It's a good day to be a Midwesterner, I guess, with our measly record high temps....

It’s mild right now. I’m in Orange County. Hardly anything happening except hype.
