What is the point of sentencing these monsters to death if we don't follow through?

I read this book...it was chilling, just absolutely CHILLING...what a monster Richard was.
I thought, however, he had a terminal cancer...maybe lung? Am not sure...but IF he does I don't see the point in him ever standing trial. There is NO cure for lung cancer.

I thought I read he had emphysema way back when talking about the Scott Peterson case. Whatever, I hope he struggles to breathe everyday of his miserable life.
