Hikers found Melissa Whitby’s body off Skyline Truck Trail east of Lyons Valley Road about 3:45 p.m., sheriff’s homicide Lt. Kenn Nelson said. She had suffered apparent trauma to the upper body, and her death was later ruled a homicide.

Nelson said the victim had been reported missing by her husband on Dec. 31. The man told investigators he had last seen his wife at their Jamul home.

NBC 7 has learned that Winnie Whitby, the husband of a woman found dead Saturday in Jamul, was tried and acquitted of a double murder charge in Maryland in the 1990s.

Winne Whitby has not been identified as a suspect or a person of interest in his wife's death, homicide detective Lt. Kenn Nelson told NBC 7.

San Diego man arrested in Maryland for wife’s murder

A San Diego man was arrested Tuesday for the murder of his wife who went missing in 2016, said officials.

Melissa Estrada Whitby,49, was reported missing by co-workers on December 30, 2016, said the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department. Her husband, Winnie Perry Whitby, 49, reported her disappearance on December 29, 2016 from their home in the 17000 block of Skyline Truck Trail in Jamul.

Husband of Woman Found Dead on Jamul Trail Pleads Not Guilty

On Thursday, Winnie Whitby arrived in an El Cajon courtroom in chains to plead not guilty to charges in connection with her death.

His trial date was set for April 8. If convicted, he could spend 26 years to life in prison.
