Identified! CA - Mendocino Co, 2 WhtFem Teens, Jul'79 *Francine Trimble & Kerry Graham*

The Mendocino co. John Doe does not appear to be in Namus but here is Derran Rogers page.
https://www.findthemissing.org/cases/4614/0/

Says a DNA sample is available but not yet submitted and his dental charts will be entered later. He's only been missing since 1973 so what's the hurry...

I know it takes resources they may not have to test and enter all this old data but it just seems so frustrating to me, not to have all the information from a 38 year old case ready yet...

The weird thing to me about the Mendocino Co. boy and girl cases is that it says they were not maternally related via DNA testing. However, they could still easily be half-siblings if they were fathered by the same man but had different mothers. I wonder why they made that distinction instead of saying that they were not related at all.

I wonder why they made that distinction instead of saying that they were not related at all.

Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) testing only addresses the maternal line, and it tells nothing about the paternal line.

mtDNA passes from mother to child virtually unchanged via the egg. A sperm cell contains no mitochondria, so mtDNA does not transfer from father to child.

They can determine paternity via nuclear DNA (nucDNA) testing, but it is a more complicated process. As I understand it, they cannot determine that two people have the same father without a nucDNA sample from the father.

Just before we left Northern California, a brother and sister disappeared while hiking. This had to be 1978/79, and I was young, so I don't remember too many details. I remember the boy had diabetes and needed insulin, and they had backpacks, and they were teenagers. I've never found any story about the original disappearance or if they were ever found? This case made me think about them.

This is interesting. I wonder if this could be followed up on somehow?

I wonder if the little girl could have been Canadian?

This is the only little girl who is missing who would now be between the ages of 40 and 50 years old. She was born in July of 1966 and has blonde hair and freckles. She went missing in 1974.

Janice Pockett would have been around 14 in 1979...I highly suggest you read The Charley Project description, its more detailed.

Janice K. Pockett
Missing since July 26, 1973 from Tolland, Tolland County, Connecticut.
Classification: Non Family Abduction

Vital Statistics

Date Of Birth: October 15, 1965
Age at Time of Disappearance: 7 years old
Height and Weight at Time of Disappearance: 4'0" (122 cm); 65 lbs (29 kg)
Distinguishing Characteristics: White female. Blonde hair; blue eyes.
Clothing: Navy blue shorts with an imprinted design and a blue and white-striped jersey.
Dentals: She has a gap between her front teeth.
Other: DNA available

Circumstances of Disappearance
Pockett left her family's home to take a bicycle ride at 15.00 on July 26, 1973. The girl told her mother she was going to get a butterfly she had left under a rock in a wooded area on Rhodes road. Her bike was found six days later on Rhoades Road, near her home, close to a wooded area.

An extensive search of the woods resulted in no clues as to Pockett's whereabouts. She has not been seen or heard from since.

A convicted murderer and known pedophile, confessed to Pockett's killing in the 1970's. He claimed that he buried Pockett in an area near Lawrence, Massachusetts. Pockett's body has never been discovered and the suspect was never charged in her disappearance. He died in prison in 1999.

The suspect claimed that Pockett was buried near the grave of Angelo Puglisi.

Janice Pockett is one of six young females either missing or found dead in the area since 1968.

July 1979 they were found. 32 years and a bit, without a name. How can they not be missed?

  • #208
I really, really pray there is a break in this case soon so these children may have their names back. I often think about them and wonder who they are and how they ended up on Highway 20.

Salem

PS - thank you guys lots and lots for continuing to look for answers in this case.

I put this girl up as a possible match to Snohomish County Precious Doe, but she might also be worth a look against the Mendocino Jane Doe.

Karen Jean Lee
(No Photo Available)
https://www.findthemissing.org/cases/12090/10

Her NamUs page indicates that she hitchhiked to California with a male companion, but there is no indication of who the male companion is, or if he is still missing also.

Her age (15) is one year above the maximum possible age for the Jane Doe, and they made a point of saying that she is not older than 14.

But the timeframe is reasonable, and her height (5'7") is close to the estimate (5 feet 5 1/2 inches)

Despite that the vital stats don't match up perfectly, the fact that she was with a male companion would seem to justify a closer look.

I am still waiting for a call-back from the librarian at Hillsboro High School (where Karen attended HS). He is going to look in the 1976 yearbook to see if there is a photo of Karen. They are currently out for Summer break, so he will not be back in the library until next week.

The 1977 yearbook is in Classmates.com, but she is not in that book.

Has Karen Jean Lee been submitted? If not, I strongly suggest doing so. Sounds like the best possible we've seen for the female. Her male companion may also be missing and not in NamUs. He could have been reported missing and fallen out of the databases due to the amount of time since the disappearance.

Gosh I agree - there seems so little about Karen lee on the web or is it that I can not find it?

I just spoke with Ed Vance of the Hillsboro PD.

He said that Karen Lee had already been ruled out against Snohomish Precious Doe.

However, he was unaware of the Mendocino John and Jane Does. He sounded very excited about this tip and is going to look into it. He says that Karen's male companion is still missing as far as he knows, but he is not focused on him because he is listed as missing in a different jurisdiction. He said that he is probably older than the 13 year old age estimate for the John Doe, but that is not going to deter him from looking into this.

He thanked me in very enthusiastic tone of voice.

I explained that I was trying to locate photos of Karen Lee, and was unable to find any in the '77 Hillsboro HS yearbook, and the '76 book was unavailable. He says that I won't find her photo there. He said that he had already looked through the HS yearbooks, and couldn't find any portraits of her. All he has is a very grainy poor quality photo of her.

How about this guy? New addition to NamUs:

Christopher William Vigil

He might be a little young, but It must have occurred to somebody to check this out.

His height is right. Timeframe is right. It's strange that he disappeared in the woods and was never found. Perhaps there was a pedophile lurking in the area who took him from the Colorado woods and transported him to Northern CA.

Why the hell is this not in NamUS?

Not sure if Dana Null has ever been considered for this doe female, but I see a facial resemblance, and also see a facial resemblance on the NCMC age progression photo below.

Dana is listed in NAMUS, but I don't see any rule outs listed.

Dana went missing October 7, 1978 from Florida with her boyfriend - reportedly driving a 1969 Dodge Coronet.
The unidentified female was found July 8, 1979 in California.

Although this is quite a distance (Florida/California), it could be possible if her boyfriend/her drove there together and abandoned the car somewhere along the way.

Not sure if the other unidentified young male could be her boyfriend as I'm still researching information on her boyfriend.

Dana is reported to be 5'4"Unidentified reported to be approximately 5' 5 1/2"
Dana reported to have blonde hairUnidentified reported to have light brown hair.

Thoughts?

I actually considered her. I ruled her out myself. I cannot remember why I did so. But I could be wrong.

I will have to look back and see why I ruled them out.

Edit: I took them off my list because of their age. The people who did the autopsy are absolutely certain that both of them are not over 14 years old. Her boyfriend is over 18.

I guess my line of thinking has always been - these two kids haven't been identified since 1979, so what would it hurt to suggest someone? Maybe they have it wrong on the age/height/weight/etc. etc. Also, most of the times I have seen a reconstruction photo and compared it to the finally identified individual - they don't look anything like the reconstructions. I just can't believe that we can't figure out who these two kids are/were. I still think Dana Null looks a lot like the reconstruction regardless of other variables (age (it's only a year off since Dana was 15 and the UID was reportedly no older than 14), boyfriend, distance, etc.)

Thanks for your input!!!!

People do screw up.

It happens.

I used to live in Mendocino county. Marijuana was everywhere. I would not be surprised if they did that autopsy high as a kite.

Eileen,
See my post above (#205, etc.). I'm glad to see someone else sees the possibility here. Have you found any information on her boyfriend that she supposedly left with?
Thanks!
