Michelle lived in an isolated house about a mile east of the small unincorporated town of Piercy CA. Like many small towns along Highway 101, the hamlet was little more than a sprinkling of houses about a rest stop. Piercy is in northern Mendocino County; the Sheriff's Office in Ukiah is about 80 miles and two hours away.

Michelle was shot in the head inside her home. It must have been a pretty ghastly wound, as Mendocino County Sheriff's Office investigators could not at first realize it was a single shot. Five years after the homicide, LE still had little to work on; they still had not identified the murder weapon. Because LE found marijuana in Michelle's home, they believe she was killed by a pot-seeking thief or thieves.

Wouldn't they NOT have found marijuana inside the house had the intent been to take it though?

The bandit(s) might not have stolen all the weed. Alternatively, they just took her money.
