This is terrible news, yet another case of domestic violence with tragic results.

After reading about cases like this it's not surprising that some of the first questions people should ask regarding missing persons involve recently ended relationships or possible history of domestic violence. Several missing persons threads I've been following recently on WS have strong indications, or at least suspicions, of domestic violence involved.

EXCLUSIVE: Deputies continue search for evidence in Missy Hernandez homicide investigation | YourCentralValley.com
Fresno County Sheriff divers are back at the canal where Missy Hernandez was found last weekend and gave KSEE24/CBS47 a look at the techniques used in this underwater crime scene as the search for more evidence continues.

[...]

Hernandez’s body was discovered weighted down beneath the surface of the water. Before bringing her up, though, deputies photographed the underwater crime scene with special cameras. Then, they used the “lift bag” technique to retrieve the body.

“It’s a bag that we’ll tie to an object using cables or chords, and then we’ll take air from our air tanks,” said Mullen. “Then we’ll fill air into that bag and that basically acts like a parachute, but it brings it up.”

The only time Fresno County prosecuted a murder without a body | YourCentralValley.com
Only once in Fresno County history has a murder been prosecuted without a body – and the convicted man was also the last person to be executed in California.

The case was brought into the spotlight recently when the Fresno County District Attorney’s Office announced earlier this month that charges were being filed against the man suspected of being responsible for the death of Missy Hernandez – despite not finding Missy’s body. However, dive crews did eventually recover Missy’s body in a canal a short time later.

Fresno County Sheriff Margaret Mims awarded Salina Barbo and her effort to help detectives arrest the man responsible for killing her friend, 30-year-old Missy Hernandez.

Barbo forced her way into Missy's home when she didn't hear from her and called the sheriff's office to report her missing and likely in trouble.

"Without their actions, Missy may not have received justice, ever been found and would still be among the thousands of people who are reported missing across the country every year," said Sheriff Mims.
