CA CA - Mitrice Richardson, 24, Malibu, 17 Sep 2009

So heartbreaking, yet one has disturbing feelings at what happened or didn't happen in this case. After watching HLN and the mother break down on JVM, I said what a tragedy, but it wasn't, this one slipped through many eyes of people who should have been concerned. #1...If I was aware that my child (who had never been in trouble before?) was being taken to police station, I'd be down there in a NY minute. Don't know what the LE report said, but am very interested...said it was 50+ pages long. Something went wrong, but the mother should have gone down there, or at the very least, found out if the daughter WOULD be detained until morning or released. LE's not going to take the time to call her back. JMO, but I'd dang sure have been down there.

bbm

The Mother discusses that in her LE call in my previous post. She was going to go and get her. Those calls are worth listening too. They answer a lot of questions.

I understand now why they are going after LE. They screwed up.

They could have offered her ride? Maybe Charlie Sheen's person LE chauffeur was available?

To clear the air, I think the Sheriff Department should release information on if any officers were sent down Malibu Canyon Rd for any reason after Mitrice was released, and why. They were the last people to see her alive (aside from the Monte Nido resident).

Even though they patrol the streets etc. I don't think they would know the wilderness area that well in terms of where to hide a body. A park ranger maybe, but not a police officer.

That's right. I'd like to see survelliance from the jail. I'd like to see for myself how MR appeared?? This is an extremely wealthy area, right? I question some of these officers motives themselves.

One thing I'd like to point out...I'm in Vegas and when they covered Mitrice on the local news tonight, they said she WAS bi-polar. This is something that just came up publicly since the "sightings" of her in Vegas. I have yet to hear whether she was ever officially diagnosed as bi-polar. And if she was, did anyone mention it to LE while she was locked up? I think that would have been important.

I hope we'll find out as her parent's lawsuits progress.

This is such a horrible tragedy. Such a beautiful girl. Such a beautiful mother who did every right that night that she could do from 80 miles away. I hope they sue the socks of the LA Police Dept. and I hope the jury sends a very strong message that they have to change their policies

ITA. In like the Dugard case, the Richardson's will win, and I mean BIG.

Yeah, but why did they let her go without her car or any of her belongings? There's no reason to impound someone's vehicle when the only infraction is not paying a restaurant bill. They claim she didn't appear to be impaired and she wasn't arrested on a traffic violation. So WHY didn't they give her back her car? And WHY would they keep her purse and cell phone?

There just will never be a reasonable explanation. Ever.

Good questions and hope we find the truthful answers.

A simple 5150 hold what have put MR under observation for 48 hours. Honestly, I have a few things I'd like to say but may offend LE (not you) and the way this was handled so poorly and with lack of regard, so I will keep them to myself ;)

I completely and utterly have sympathy to the family of MR. This shouldn't have happened.

Yep, simple 5150 would have worked fine in this case.

Why didn't the mother tell LE this when speaking to them though?

She was released just after midnight. Mother says something was going on and felt Mitrice was in a depressive state. Mother says she doesn't take meds and felt whatever was going on was very recent. This info is in the 911 calls.

I haven't been following this on WS, just through HLN, etc., but on JVM and NG tonight they played some of the call and I didn't hear her say she would definitely be down there, just asking if Mitrice would be released or held over? Did she every follow through? I'll have to go back and see the video posted above.
I agree I think LE messed up by not detaining her, but I would have been down there...pronto.

Curious to see what that 50+ page police report entails.

I apologize for stepping in here a little late and not being up to speed on the details. I saw her tearful mother on JVM and it was just heart wrenching...especially after hearing her fears of what might happen to MR if she was released. An OMG moment for sure.

I'm not one to blame LE very much and try to give them the benefit of the doubt, even though I may have doubts on occasion. However, for the first time ever, I truly blame them for what happened to Mitrice.

NG is covering this tonight. 7pm Pacific standard time.

NG: MR confirmed remains through dental records. Rupa-I understand there was a match through dental records.

2 miles away from MR went missing. That night the beauty queen was having dinner couldn't pay for her bill. LE was called. LE went for some sort of payment but did not find MR's purse in her car. The bill was for $89.00, why did they take MR into custody over $89.00? Think that it was because of her behavior that is why LE was called. The restaurant said MR was acting really odd. MR said "she was an alien sent to avenge Micheal Jackson's death". The mom has called 911, and received confirmation that MR was at Geoffry's in Malibu. Mom was concerned about MR's safety. Was very pleasant to LE, and said "that she didn't want to ID MR's body with her head chopped off". LE assured MR's mother that they would look out for her.

MR mother said, that Malibu was not where her daughter was from and MR's mother wanted to make sure that MR was okay, and felt she was "SAFE" with LE, that is why MR's mother didn't come and get her.

NG: LE released and MR wanders out seemingly confused and disorientated. There were witnesses that saw MR leave on foot. LE offered to let MR to wait in lobby and MR refused. Another witness sees MR in his backyard at 6:30am. This witness sees MR on foot. NG finds it hard to believe that MR just wandered into this canyon. MR's father agrees. MR's father is only getting his info by the media. (WTH!!)...MR's father does not believe that a lot of people are being forthright with him. MR was a beauty queen, 4.0 grade average all her life. MR was hopeful, didn't want to blame, "give me this child back because she is so worth it". MR was a good kid. So many things went wrong the night she disappeared.

NG: LE states that they conducted a pathological test. Will not go into the 'gruesome state of the corpse'. MR was there for a long period of time.

After the autopsy, they will be able to tell if MR was murdered or other. Beautiful girls get slipped drugs all the time. Why would LE release MR? MR was not a danger to herself. So they released her.

Geoffrey's rest. states MR sounded like she was on drugs. MR was wearing a black T-shirt and blue jeans. LE released MR. Never seen again by her family. Now a few miles a way, almost one year later, her body has been found.

Mark Klauss: Mark thinks 3 things have happened. Mother should have been called from LE that MR was released. Very easily someone could have took her back there and murdered her there. Pot farmers are protective of their crops. That time of year the buds are in bloom and they may have murdered her to protect their crop.

Cannot put 5150 on hold unless there is a danger. LE should have been better with Mental Screening. MR was showing maniac behavior and may have been prone to wandering. It is going to be difficult to see if MR was murdered. Unlikely to discern COD.

Skull belonged to MR. Father learned at 9:45am this morning. MR's father will investigate. There is human error. There is hope. MR father is 19 year veteran with ER. He works with LE. If compassionate, they could have brought MR to the nearest facility which was 30 miles away...

I read somewhere earlier today (can't remember where) that Mitrice's Mother said she wanted Mitrice to stay in jail that night to "learn a lesson." I'm thinking if her family knew she was bi-polar, she wouldn't have said that.

Even so, I assume LE knew that she wasn't under the influence of drugs or alcohol when they let her go. So, if she was behaving strangely in any way, it would have to have been due to mental illness.

I don't find it hard to believe for a few reasons. First, in one of the many articles about this case, somebody at Geoffrey's noted that Mitrice said she "wanted to be with nature." This is what seemed to lead the search into Malibu Creek State Park.

Second, if she was aware that she was lost, she probably panicked. In the case of Jared Michael Negrete, the boy scout that vanished off a hiking trail, LE had evidence that he tried to slide down the mountain. His instinct was that he was lost, and needed to get off the mountain. Mitrice could have guessed which way would take her back to her car, and went in that direction...into the canyon, out of panic.

I don't find it hard to believe, either, given her obvious state of mind. And I sincerely hope no one harmed her.

I am familiar with Malibu Canyon, I've driven through it many times when I was growing up. It is huge, and there are lots of wilderness. Are there still mountain lions up there as well?
