(CNN) -- The mother of a missing California woman is suing the county of Los Angeles and several sheriff's officials for wrongful death and negligence in her daughter's 2009 disappearance, court documents say.

Mitrice Richardson, a 24-year-old former beauty pageant contestant, was last seen leaving a Malibu, California, sheriff's station in the early morning hours of September 17. Richardson had been arrested hours earlier after employees at Geoffrey's, an upscale Malibu restaurant, told police she refused to pay her $89 bill.

The Board of Supervisors today renewed a $10,000 reward for information leading to Mitrice Richardson, who has been missing since September when she suffered a mental breakdown, was arrested in Malibu and then released after midnight.

The father of a woman who disappeared last year in Malibu filed a lawsuit Tuesday against the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, alleging negligence while she was in its custody...

...The suit filed by Michael Richardson is similar to one filed four weeks ago by Mitrice’s mother, Latice Sutton.

Both suits seek damages and contend that Mitrice exhibited signs of mental instability while in custody -- grabbing the walls of the holding cell, pulling her hair -- but officials did not hold her for a mental health evaluation.

Sutton said when she filed her lawsuit that she had been allowed to watch a sheriff’s department videotape of her daughter that showed her acting strangely in the holding cell. Michael Richardson has spent enormous amounts of time searching for his daughter.


In his lawsuit, he specifically asks for damages for emotional distress, as well as for loss of earnings and medical expenses.

I am sorry, but I called this one from the beginning. They are pulling the race card and I knew the lawsuit would be next. Now they are both sueing no less for distress. Try to find your Daughter first before you do all this. That would be the first thing on my mind. I understand where they are coming from, but in my opinion that is their first priority. Sue because she is black and didn't get a fair outcome. There are plenty of people missing and their Parents are not sueing. Sorry don't agree with this one. I mean really all they did was have motorcycle rides for money and are blaming everyone else. I don't agree that she is missing and the cops let her go, but there would have been a lawsuit if the Malibu Sherriffs didn't let her go. Not goin for this one. What happened to the bill she didn't pay?

Normally, I would agree with you and I WISH no one would play the race card here.

But, I'm sorry, LE SHOULD NOT HAVE TURNED HER OUT into the world! Alone and with none of her belongings. I don't know if it was race-related, but it NEVER should have happened - no matter whether she was black, white, blue or purple.

They f'ed up. I don't care how LE spins it. They were negligent and Matrice is gone.

My heart goes out to her family and everyone who loved her.

There is absolutely NO mention of race in regard to this or the mother's lawsuit. Further, according to BOTH lawyers for these parents, the primary reason for the lawsuits is to force LE to provide information:
"His lawyer, Benjamin Schonbrun, said Michael Richardson’s biggest loss “is the big gaping hole in his heart from missing his daughter…I just want to make sure that people understand this lawsuit was not filed for his own monetary gain…This lawsuit is about seeking the truth, obtaining information the sheriff has not provided.”
Schonbrun said that would include videotapes, audiotapes, witness statements and internal reports.
Sutton’s lawyer, Leo Terrell, similarly said last month that he expects his client’s lawsuit to make tapes and reports available."

While I'm bothered that they are filing lawsuits....I don't know the statue of limitations on this issue...but, moreover, if LE is withholding info, video, or anything from the family....perhaps they are doing exactly what they say they are doing....trying to learn every shread of evidence regarding their daughter's last known moments. IMHO.

I'm glad to see the family is filing suit against LE. LE did not do their job, in my opinion and has failed to step up to the plate and help find this young woman.

I was reading earlier today on some recent links that LE during their investigation discovered her journals and there was an indication within them that she may have been bipolar.

Perhaps she is/was having a manic episode?

This article says that she MAY be alive and in Vegas....the Sheriff Dept. even says that it isn't definitive...i would take this news with precaution!!
