CA CA - Mitrice Richardson, 24, Malibu, 17 Sep 2009

  • #421
I always thought she was lost in Malibu Canyon. There was a sighting of a black woman the day after she disappeared, on a major road in the canyon - but it was totally discounted!

20 miles is not far. Walk for 3 hours and you've gone 6 to 8 miles. She could easily have made that in 2 days.

Maybe she fell off the road into a gully. I wouldn't have believed it possible to fall of a road until it happened to my daughter in a forest. She went to close to the edge & just slid down into a gully.

Jade2010, I think there were maps posted by someone at the begining of the thread.

It's been almost a year - her poor parents - what a tragedy for all concerned.

Sheriff's Spokesman Steve Whitmore Doubts Bones Belong To Missing Woman Mitrice Richardson

A sheriff's spokesman said late Monday it was unlikely that remains found in a remote canyon near Malibu belong to missing twentysomething Mitrice Richardson, even as her family descended on the sheriff's Lost Hills station in search of answers.

The find of bones in an unincorporated area called Monte Nido was reported about 1 p.m. Monday after Park Rangers making a routine check of a canyon used to grow marijuana in the past came across the remains, according to authorities and television news reports. The area is about five miles from the sheriff's Lost Hills station. Still, spokesman Steve Whitmore said he doubted the bones belonged to Richardson:

Wonder why he doubts the bones belong to Matrice? If they are bones it seems to me it would be difficult to tell who they belonged to unless they were those of a child.

Wonder if they can tell by looking the gender of the remains found? Maybe a man? I don't know. JMHO.

Yeah, they might be obviously from a much larger or smaller person, or have indications they're a male skeleton, or have associated belongings that don't look like hers, or have some hair left that's long and blonde, etc.

The LA Times is reporting that the remains found in Malibu Canyon belong to a female (and that women's clothing was found nearby). No link yet, though.

Wondering the same thing myself. It's funny they were so sure she was in Vegas, and they are kindof sure this is not her. What more do they know that they are not saying. Why is there nothing more about Vegas after the big conference? It's very possible and more plausible that this could be her in Malibu.

Monte Nido is the community where she was last seen (the neighborhood). This is where I suspected she may be found, if this is her.

I am getting the chills because I reported a smell in that area, but that was earlier this year, so it may in fact not be her.

Oh my UCLA. Did you search that area too? I remember friends and family had gathered and did a search one day. That's where the man called 911 and said there was a strange woman in his backyard right?

I don't want to doom Mitrice and her family but this ... well I think this is the end. ARgh.

That poor child.

The 911 call came from a neighborhood off of Piuma Rd and on maps this neighborhood is labeled Monte Nido. Based on this last sighting, I suspected she continued walking east on Piuma Rd and ended up in the wilderness. There are big homes in the area, but a lot of wilderness and canyon around the road between these sporadic houses.

Based on the photo given with the dirt road, I suspect this isn't actually Monte Nido proper, but the area directly to the east of it (or some other rural area around it, but not close to Malibu Cyn Rd). Had it been closer to Malibu Canyon Rd I would think they would have just said Malibu Canyon.

The odor I smelled was definitely a large dead animal, but not sure if it was human. This was right past Piuma Rd heading south before the tunnel. It was very heavy. I suspect that is why the police do not believe this is Mitrice. If the body found today and the smell are related, the timing would not be right.

I'm leaning more towards they (LE) are hoping it's not Mitrice, for their sakes.

Remains found in Malibu Canyon said to be that of a woman; link, if any, to Mitrice Richardson is unclear

I agree with you there Jade about them hoping it won't be her, but I don't think the parents are going to get too far because the police let her go to tell ya the truth. I think it was their obligation to let her go. If they would have kept her it would have been a problem or a racial issue. JMO.

I remember you stating that you smelled a foul odor. How weird. That is a large deep canyon with lots of animals, but how many times do you drive thru there and smell things? Not often, so I would tend to guess it was a body. Mitrice could be anywhere in that canyon and who's to say it isn't possible that she couldn't have ended up there whether it be likely or not? I am leaning towards that it is her.

I am torn. I did and still believe she is in the canyon. The timing of all of this is just so weird or ironic, with all the claims that she was seen in Vegas.

Piuma Rd is very windy so she could also be south of where she was last seen, or she could have continued north on Cold Canyon Rd (one of the streets cited in the 911 call incident). Looking at a map I am trying to imagine a radius around the approx location of the call, and this quote:

"The remains — which include a skull — were found about two and a half miles from the last credible sighting of her on Sept. 17. The discovery casts an ominous shadow over the case of the missing woman." from the LA Times article.

Since the article mentions Monte Nido, this is likely with respect to the last unconfirmed sighting (the 911 call).

Well, that does not help one bit:

Maybe we will get good news and the sightings of Mitrice will turn out to
be correct. That would be wonderful to have a happy ending to a missing
person's story. We can only hope.

JVM is going to cover Mitrice right now. Her Dad will be on the show also.

A lady from the LA Times is on JVM says her sources confirm the body is that of a female and that Levis jeans were found close by. Mitrice was wearing Levis. Gosh! I hope this isn't her! I was hoping there was something to those Vegas sightings!
