The incident, which is believed to be an accident at this time, was reported just after 7:30 a.m. at the Biscailuz Training Facility in the 1000 block of North Eastern Avenue in East Los Angeles, LASD said. It is believed to be the compound that houses the sheriff's department's special enforcement units and bomb squad.

Authorities have not said what caused the blast, but law enforcement sources told the LA Times that a bomb squad had been moving explosives around that time.

Only one of two grenades that were found at a Santa Monica apartment building storage unit last week detonated the following day in East Los Angeles — killing three sheriff’s detectives — but the second grenade is missing, Sheriff Robert Luna said Friday.

Luna and Kenny Cooper, special agent in charge of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives’ Los Angeles office, urged anyone in the public who may spot what appears to be the device to avoid touching it and call 911.

Cooper said the investigation into last Friday’s deadly explosion determined “definitively” that only one grenade detonated, and there is no sign of the second device. Luna said the Biscailuz Regional Training Center where the blast occurred has been thoroughly searched and there has been no public access to the facility since the explosion.

The day before the explosion, members of the sheriff’s department’s arson and explosives unit arrived at an apartment in Santa Monica to assist local police after a resident said they found what appeared to be two hand grenades in a tenant’s storage unit in the underground parking garage, Luna said. The detectives X-rayed the devices and believed they were “inert,” or inactive.

The devices were then taken to be “destroyed and rendered safe” at the Biscailuz Training Facility, he said.
