Yeah, I wonder how often she rented a boat for a outing like this or was this a spur of the moment idea to do something fun with her little one. IMO, it seems risky to me but who knows.

IMO, I don’t think he made it back on the boat alone from the water. I also don’t see her keeping him onboard while she got in alone either.

Someone just posted maybe she got him onboard, then she drowned. This is a good scenario. This story is also giving me pause & it’s terribly sad. IMO

Just to be clear I am not criticizing her or "mom-shaming." I just think there may be something more to what happened. I wonder if she was planning to meet up with anyone on the lake, or if it could be a suicide. There have been a few cases recently where LE immediately jumped to accident and I think there was foul play involved so maybe my hinky meter is on overdrive.

I think that's the most likely explanation- that she put him back on first and then for some reason couldn't get back on herself. It seems like if she's that close to the boat though that she could grab on and pull herself off. Maybe he was tired so she put him up and went off for one more swim.

I know they're talking about hypothermia but it's LA in July - this article (from 1993!) puts the water temperature at Lake Piru at 78 degrees in June. It has been in the 90s all week this month so it can't be that cold.

Majestic Lake Piru Is a Big Splash : It's the only lake in the county that allows swimming. Expect crowds on the weekends.

Naya's actual recovered boat appears to me to have a small ladder hooked on the edge near the rear gate.

It's unsafe to go swimming or boating alone, period. It seems especially reckless to do so with a small child in unfamiliar waters but the social distancing and the current prevailing wisdom that outdoor activities are safest has many people doing things that are more dangerous than they seem. I'm glad the little boy is safe but it will certainly be a traumatic memory once it sinks in.

Be careful around water, People.

@Alethea the area the boat was found yesterday was close to 30feet deep. I guess at the bottom it could be colder

What makes the visibility for the divers so poor? The depth? And also what kind of dangerous conditions for them? Are there underwater hazards, like roots or branches? Something that would have caught her and prevented her from surfacing again? Or maybe she did hit her head getting her son back onboard. Possibly she just experienced a cramp and went under.

It seems to be a large reservoir, as they mostly are and I can see how vast a search it would possibly be.

I also just thought of her struggling to get him back up or maybe him being scared and thrashing around. That could exert a lot of energy on her. It’s safe to assume (IMO) she didn’t have a life jacket on, with one being onboard.

It would be interesting to hear what the water temps actually were at the boat location. IMO

Out of curiosity, why is it the only lake in the area that you can swim at?

I'm leaning towards awful tragedy but definitely have some questions.

Found this so answers my own questions.

Authorities believe 'Glee' actress Naya Rivera drowned in California lake

Deputy Dyer said the search was suspended at 10 p.m. Wednesday because of dangerous conditions. Visibility in the water during the day was about eight to 10 inches and there was lots of debris and full-size trees under the water and "varying depths."

If the water is so full of hazards it hardly sounds like they should be renting leisure boats to recreate?

Amateur opinion and speculation

Actress Naya Rivera, known for 'Glee,' a possible drowning victim after going boating on Southern Calif. lake
She rented a boat at the lake with her 4-year-old son Wednesday afternoon, authorities say. About three hours later another boater spotted a boat on the lake drifting with a young child asleep on board. The boater contacted rangers who began a search for the child's parent using an aerial survey and a dive team.

After several hours, authorities suspended the search for the night and plan to resume on Thursday.
This is just so sad.
I hope that little guy is doing OK and she is found soon.
Doesn't look to promising but praying for them both.

This is exactly what I think happened. I moved on the lake last month and I have the same type of pontoon she rented. With her having no life jacket on there’s no way she would be able to get him up that ladder. When we go out with my 6 and 3 yr old grandsons it takes one person on board to pull them up while the other adult in the water that has a life jacket on is guiding them up the ladder. Without a life jacket it would be a struggle for her for sure. Then panic would set in. I can’t imagine. Imo

I also find it strange for the life jacket to be left on the boat, which gives me the impression that she could swim, and the only other way is she either hit her head or got into some trouble in the water. I really hope she's found soon. This is so heartbreaking

This is so heartbreaking. :( I am attaching the link to where I found this information on the drownings. Apparently, there have been at least 10 drownings since 1994. They all have a common theme.... Without a life jacket, even if you are a swimmer, is basically playing russian roulette IMO..

Lake Piru - Wikipedia

In August 1994, 27-year-old Jesus Danilo Carranza from North Hollywood drowned while on an outing with his family despite wearing a life jacket.[12]

In July 1997, Liborio Dominguez from Long Beach drowned while trying to rescue his daughter. The young girl was saved, but Dominguez's body was not discovered until several days later.[12]

In September 1997, 22-year-old Isidro Castillo from Newhall encountered problems while swimming and called for his girlfriend to throw him a buoy. The woman was unable to get the flotation device to him. His body was found a day later.[12]

In September 1997, rescue workers recovered the body of 30-year-old Port Hueneme resident Ulises Anthony Mendoza, who was last seen struggling days earlier while swimming with family members near their boat.[12]

In 1997, park officials speculated that wind gusts and deep columns of chilly water on the lake, which is up to 160 ft deep depending on the time of year, can overtake swimmers quickly.[12]

In February 1998, the body of Lake Piru employee Arthur Raymond Caladara was found drowned near the dock.[12]

In June 1998, the body of 30-year-old Vy Xuan Dang from Garden Grove, who disappeared while swimming with his family during the Memorial Day weekend, was found by a park ranger.

In September 2000, 25-year-old Van Nuys resident Edie Cruz, swam the short distance to his stalled radio-controlled model boat, and drowned only 10 feet from shore. Douglas West, Lake Piru's parks and recreation services manager, said there had been about a dozen drownings during his 23 years at the lake. Most victims are inexperienced swimmers who are not wearing life jackets and who overestimate their own abilities or swim in prohibited areas.[12]

Naftoli Smolyanksy died in a boating accident in August 2008. Smolyansky had taken his 9-year-old son and 5 and 7-year-old daughters out on the lake Monday afternoon when his youngest daughter fell off the boat. He jumped into the water to save her, and managed to get her back on the boat as it drifted away. Smolyanksy was unable to swim to the boat and did not resurface.[13]

In May 2010, 36-year-old Roberto Barrios was celebrating his graduation from nursing school with a group of about two dozen people, when he went for a swim off of their pontoon boat. He had been swimming for about five minutes when the wind started pushing the boat away from him and two friends. People on a nearby boat rescued the two other people, but those on the pontoon boat couldn't get close enough to rescue Barrios before he disappeared under water. A few days later Ventura County Sheriff's dive team found Barrios at the bottom of the lake. [14]

Where I live in New England (which is very different from LA), they rent these exact boats for bird watching and wildlife spotting on our big lakes but they ask you to stay on the boat. They also have guided tours. There are other areas in our lakes region for swimming and of course if you have a privately owned boat or kayaks you can do whatever dumb thing you want. I'm glad someone pointed out the ladder because our pontoons don't have them and are only meant for getting on and off at the dock.

So I was looking at the Lake website and it seems that while swimming is permitted at Lake Piru it is only permitted at the designated sandy beach onsite.
I am sure lots of people rent the boats for fishing and sightseeing around the lake and probably anchor and go for a swim while doing so but it doesn’t seem recommended to rent a boat to go swimming
We have a place on a reservoir in upstate NY and I would never jump off our fishing boat in the middle of the lake to go swimming. The water is deep and cold and I would be scared of getting snagged on underwater debris. I use the cleared and safe designated beach only.
I agree that something is off about this. Poor baby and poor mama.

I swim extreme distance, in fact I was supposed to swim across Lake Tahoe this year, but I postponed till next due to Covid. However I would have had a full boat accompany me. People constantly underestimate the power of water, currents etc. My friend lost her fiance in the ocean due to just that reason. It only takes a few minutes. We actually had paddleboarders rescue a guy in the res here the other day...he just got lucky they were near.
I'm sure she could swim, but that doesn't mean you aren't risking drowning at any time as well.

She unfortunately made the same mistake of underestimating the power of water and currrents. RIP Naya. I feel so badly for her son, I'm glad he made it back to the boat...but that's got to be very traumatic for him.

This...even as an accomplished swimmer, especially with a 4 year old, you can never be too cautious. I am so sad she wasn't wearing a life vest, her poor son will now grow up without a mother. So tragic:(

Naya Rivera hinted at Eminem song about mother sinking in lake | Daily Mail Online

Naya Rivera's last Instagram post was a tragic foreshadowing of her presumed death, as the Glee star's caption made an eerie reference to an Eminem lyric from a song about a child who watched their mother sink to the bottom of a lake.

The actress is feared dead after renting a pontoon boat on Wednesday afternoon with her four-year-old son Josey on Lake Piru, which is 60 miles from Rivera's LA home.

The little boy was was found alone on the boat and told officials that his 33-year-old mother had jumped into the water and never came back up.

On Tuesday, Rivera posted a photo of herself and Josey with the caption: 'Just the two of us'.

Fans have pointed out the haunting similarity between her caption and the lyrics to Eminem's song 97' Bonnie & Clyde, where he raps about a child watching their mother sink to the bottom of a lake, following a custody battle with her former partner.
Oh dear Lord.. I hope she didn't do this on purpose.
I have to admit, it crossed my mind yesterday when I first read about it but I quickly diminished that thought.
Now I have to wonder.
OR is it just a weird, strange coincidence ??
