There were several murders quite close to where this Doe was found. The murders of Melissa Mattingly and Tina Marie Shrader in 1984 were mentioned by the Nevada County sheriff at the time.
"Deputies eye Sierra killing link" The Union, July 12, 1984, pg 1.
"Nevada County Sheriff's investigators....were looking into possible links between the deaths of a woman found bludgeoned and strangled Sunday near the South Fork of the Yuba River and two 17-year-old girls whose bodies were found in Sierra County on July 4."
"Authorities said [Nevada County Jane Doe] received blows to her head which may have been severe enough to be fatal had she not been strangled with an electrical cord."
"Dental charts and several fingerprints have been sent to the DOJ"
"The nude bodies of Melissa Mattingly, 17, of Fresno, and Tina Marie Shrader, 18, of North Highlands [Sacramento] were found bludgeoned July 4 in Sierra County.
"The girls were last heard from May 27...hitchhiking to the Santa Cruz area."
"An autopsy revealed the backs of their heads had been bludgeoned."
The suspect of the Mattingly and Shrader murder was found not guilty in 1988. He had worked with Mattingly and admitted to taking the girls to Lake Tahoe. He allegedly left the girls in the company of an "unidentified motorist with out of state plates".
