Unfortunately, Fairy1, there was some difficulty with your link going directly to the story. However I did access the same story through the source.

Thankfully there is DNA evidence directly linking the suspect to Norma's murder.........as well as a vehicle matching the one witnessed leaving the scene.

Norma's killer was in court today. Next hearing is January 18th, and by then they should decide on whether to pursue the death penalty.

Jan 18 has come and gone with nothing, not a word in the news.

Jesse Perez Torres will face the DP.

The man charged with killing Moreno Valley teenager Norma Lopez three years ago could face the death penalty if found guilty of her death.
Prosecutors announced this week that they would seek the death penalty against Jesse Perez Torres, 37, who was ordered to stand trial on murder and kidnapping charges.
A judge ruled there was sufficient evidence to try Torres after a single DNA sample was found on her earring, which matched Torres.

Trial was supposed to start September 15th but I can't find anything to suggest it ever started...

A Riverside County judge has set a tentative trial date in September for the man charged with kidnapping and killing 17-year-old Norma Lopez in Moreno Valley.

A jury trial is set to begin Sept. 15 for Jesse Perez Torres, 37, who could face the death penalty or life in prison without parole if he’s convicted.

Moreno Valley police arrested Torres in 2011 in Long Beach, more than a year after Norma was kidnapped while walking home from summer school classes at Valley View High School in Moreno Valley.

Not a word. I've been trying too. The main reporter keeping up with the story (John Asbury) seems to have moved on and I don't see any new articles from him at all.

I wish they hadn't just dropped the story. There was also a facebook page "Find Norma Lopez" that is no longer there.

I will update if I see anything. Meanwhile, here is the Norma Lopez Case Archive:

I just can't find anything about this trial. Maybe it's dragging on and on because it's a death penalty case?

What is even more frustrating is if he is convicted and sentenced to death, he could be waiting 30 or 40 years for his date with the needle. I'll be long gone by then.

There are men on Death Row in California who have been there since 1980 and are no closer to their execution date than they were back then. The process is a scandal.

Norma's murder was 5 years ago today. Torres still awaits trial but is on his 3rd defense team, and that has caused delays. He is scheduled for a trial-setting conference 7/24/15.

Soccio said the case has been ready to go to trial from the prosecution’s perspective for more than a year. A major challenge has been finding Torres appropriate defense counsel. His first public defender was appointed to a judgeship, after which his next public defender declared a conflict in representation, leading to yet a third defense team.

“The judge has said she’s going to hold his lawyers to a timetable that’s reasonable,” Soccio said. “I believe the trial will happen in the fall. The community is ready to have this finished. And for the sake of the family, I hope it ends. They have suffered. When a young girl is kidnapped and killed, the pain is severe.”

Inmate Information System

12/13/2018 is the new trial date posted.
This is absolutely disgusting from the family’s perspective
They will NEVER forget Norma, but how can they possibly hope to move on in their lives when everything pertaining to their daughters death has been on hold for 6 years, stuck in the court system?
It’s an appalling travesty of justice so far . You bet your bottom $ that had this been the daughter of say a prominent Politician living in a secluded gated community and earning top $ , that it would have been heard in Court and resulted about 4 years ago. Her poor family..... their pain just goes on and on without abating. RIP beautiful young lady forever. X
